I'm almost certain of the answers I will receive but, here goes. I replaced a worn carrier bearing and u joints in my 69, the drive line was installed 90+ degrees out of phase by who ever owned this thing last. ( Got her out of a honey hole of a horde with everything from old school king cabs to rusted out school buses) At any rate, I tried to phase this thing properly and can't seem to get it to line up correctly, it's always what looks like a tooth off. If I rotate things a tooth in the right direction, then it is a tooth off in the opposite direction. I thought to myself that maybe it only lines up properly in a single direction so I tried every direction possible even both ways 90 degrees out of phase to be sure. Still, its off by a few degrees. I'm at a bit of a loss and before I admit defeat and take it to a professional, I figured I'd throw up a post and hope someone would be able to shed some light on what I may be doing wrong. If I'm not doing anything wrong, is it possible somewhere along the line mismatched parts were thrown together that don't have the ability to be phased properly but still actually go together?
Your truck didn't by any chance come out of Soddy Daisy Tenn.? That guy had some really cool stuff from what I saw on you tube. And to answer the last part of your question I would say yes.
After playing with this thing a bit more I've come to the conclusion that the yoke on the transmission side of the drive shaft may have broken some time in the past and been replaced out of phase by someone with some decent welding skills. I'm going to go junkyard crawling and see if I can't get a drive shaft that'll line up properly.....
I went to a few yards around me and looked to see what they had and the drive lines they had were phased as bad or worse than mine. I'm just going to roll with it for now, this thing wont see much mileage for a while and I have alot of tinkering to do to it on other areas before it becomes a real necessity, at which time I may just put a brand new drive shaft in or take this one in to get balanced.
In the diagram that Yardbird posted it lists the front joint as the “odd joint” and I wondered about that.
Does it mean just because it’s a single with no matching joint at the end of the shaft? Or does it mean that it’s out of phase with the rear shaft?
We can’t see both joints on the other shaft in your pictures, but are they in phase with each other? It would certainly be critical for a single driveshaft with a joint at each end to be in phase. But I wonder if they purposely run the odd joint out of phase slightly to accomplish the goal.
This might explain why all the others you have found were similar or worse.
