I see people putting the 4x4 front ends in the dually trucks and having to box the frame, get a transfer case, and cutting a hole for the transfer case shifter. How hard would it be to get a 3/4 ton crew cab 4x4 and just swap the springs and rear end to a dually, and putting a dually bed on?
You can do that also, but note finding a real DRW axle is tricky that is not for the cab and chassis trucks. Then you have to find the front adapters, apparently they are about $250/ea for the front I think I read. Never looked into it much.
I would like to see D44 beams, D50 center, bolted to a true dually truck. Retain the nice coil ride, but have IFS for a better ride than a leaf sprung 4x4 truck.
I didn't realize that there was a difference in the drw axles for a cab and chassis. I thought just the frames were narrower? Are the axles narrower also?
The frames being narrower require the mounting points to be at different points on the axle. The axle itself is also narrower then the proper drw axle.
I swapped from a srw axle with spacers to a real drw axle.
The axle for a srw and drw will physically mount up exactly the same. Just the drw axle is 3" wider on each side.
If you go looking at a pick n pull make sire they check if it has a normal bed on the truck. Chassis cab trucks didn't have a normal bed, it'd be a utility bed of some sort.
I will need to measure some drw axles, but moving the mounting points wouldn't be to bad of a job. Thanks for the help, still seems easier then swapping the front axles.
