The transmission pan with the raised ribs between the bolt holes is for the (throw away) cork gasket.
The reusable rubber pan gasket needs to have a transmission pan with smooth surface between bolt holes.

huh.. my pan I THOUGHT had no raised ridges, but it doesnt contain the "This pan has a reusable gasket" text in it either(nor a drain plug) but I didnt take any pictures with the gasket off the perimeter. guess i will not know until it comes down again lol
If you have the wrong gasket it will leak very bad as in putting the reusable gasket on a pan that is made for the cork gasket.
I had to switch to a newer style pan to use the reusable gasket.

I was sad when I saw cork when I did my change because I have a 96 truck, so I also didnt have the filter with the little "legs" on it that ensure it stays retained in the seal o ring thing. But thats okay. I figured even if I had a newer pan to use the elastomeric gasket, Id still eventually want a 4r100 pan with a drain bolt.
If you can do proper shifting at the transmisson then the problem is likely between there and the shifter on the column. If I remember correctly the cable has an adjustment to take up slack or add slack. It's not far from the transmission end. If you've checked things under the dash, consider making some adjustments here. Try to note where you start before turning it so you can put it back if you needed to. Count your turns, that sort of thing.
