I purchased a billet aluminum solid state distributor from demotorperformance (Ebay) Nice pierce, aluminum polished up really well, space saver size, clears my Weber carbs, 2 wire hookup, all good, no wiring diagram, website says no diagram available/provided. Have 1 black wire and black wire with red stripe. Logic says red-stripe wire is hot I just don't want to experiment, has anyone used this dist in a Cleveland or a 460? It will fit either. I would like to know so that I can fire it tomorrow....................... without the traditional 4th fireworks. (LOL) Thanks
In my absence the past few days I have done a lot of testing and basic trouble shooting. Part of that is trying to reach "Demotor Performance" with absolutely no progress, there is no phone number in the "Contact us" section of their website, in addition to any other kind of contact info. One selection goes to a line drawing of an animal with his head stuck in a hole in the ground with the message "the page doesn't appear to be there. The California phone number on my original paper work is disconnected. I went searching the web and found photos of an identical (at least in the photos) billet distributor from Skip White performance in Tennessee, I left a message (Saturday) on their toll free contact # and got a call at 0740 Az time today (07-11-22) it seems that this dist needs an electronics pack $200.oo plus and a coil for about $35.00. No where does Demotor Performance tell you this. Due to the fact that this billet dist is a clone of a Ford factory unit, I will be replacing the internals with a Mallory Unilite ($100.00) which works with a standard coil and no spark box. (No extra crap hanging in the engine compartment or behind the dash) I have had this same unit in my '56 for many years and many thousands of miles. Sometimes you just need a little luck to make a bad buy OK. I will post here again when the swap is complete.
Well, the saga continues, I ordered a Mallory Unilite, it will work with a stock configured coil, It arrived yesterday. Today, I disassembled the non working billet distributor and it looks as though I may be able to put the Unilite innards into the billet housing, that will necessitate swapping the mounting plate/advance mechanism from the factory dist and moving from there. It appears that the top of the factory dist shaft is a bigger diameter that the billet monster so I'll have to address that when I get there. Fun with hot rods!
Everybody needs the opportunity to whine once in a while, today is my opportunity. Since the last post I made here I have been thru 2 "guaranteed to work" distributors and have broken the case on another while attempting to remove a dist from it's 30 year resting/rusting place in an old engine. Bottom line here is that I still need a Non-HEI distributor for a 351C or a 429-460 (they are the same). I can convert it to full mechanical advance and replace the points with a Mallory Unilite. Help me out here please, this is the only thing keeping this bad boy, too long-term project from being street ready. Thanks to all
I may be remembering wrong but if you change the gear you may be able to use 351W also. Does Mallory make a unilite for a duraspark model? If they do the duraspark models have a better baseplate. It rotates in a perfect circle, the older points baseplate turned in an arc.
I've heard too many stories of problems with Unilites to trust one. The distributors with magnetic trigger wheels are as bulletproof as they get, but most are HEI-style. A Pertronix would be an option.

I agree, just a simple dura spark with an original box. AMC bought them from Ford till Chrysler took over. Chrysler system as well as the HEI MSD modules all used the magnetic pickup and could be adapted. Some wiring instructions vague.
I guess the "powers that be" smiled down on me today, I stopped at my local parts store for one thing and during the ensuing bull session I mentioned my distributor story and asked if they had a listing for anything that might help. Eric#1 said he would look it up and see, Eric#2 (2 Erics at this store) said he would check the shelves. At almost the same time there was 1 BRAND NEW distributor in the computer and there it was on the shelf. $151,00 later it was mine. Unfortunately this morning I had inadvertently washed my wallet along with my shop clothes and everything was at home hanging up to dry. Tomorrow the deal goes down! Those of you who don't know me may think this whole thing is far fetched but I can only tell you that it's all true and there are even a few details left out. Some days you are the bug and some days you are the windshield.
And to Ross, the Unilite in my 56 has been bullet-proof since day 1 and now is approaching 20K miles, and you know all the problems I have had are magnet/trigger wheel, it seems that the pick-ups are defective. I do have a trouble shooting guide for them that have no spark if anyone is interested. Go figure
