sputters and stalls until it gets warm (mostly)
Description: Usually starts fine. If I let it warm up it is pretty good almost every time. If I try to step on the gas pedal, it will sputter, miss a lot, and if I let my foot off the pedal, the RPM's drop and it stalls. After cranking for a bit, it will usually restart. If I try to press the pedal now, I can to all the way to the floor and it will usually just sit and sputter and cough at about 1K RPM. It will eventually work it's way up in RPM.
The other symptom is that if I drive it before it is fully warmed up, it will usually stall once I am driving and it starts to pour a huge amount of smoke out the tail pipe. Then it seems like it soft of has blown it's nose and all the smoke is clear and it runs fine. But will still miss a lot at higher RPM and under load. Sometimes I will be driving down the road and it has been running good for a while and it will shutter and shake and miss a lot and again a ton of smoke comes back and then it sort of seems to clear after a bit.
I have about 280K miles on the truck and did injectors about 70K miles ago. I just changed the fuel filter and the air cleaner.
I am a rancher that does horsemanship lessons for special needs kids. Money is insanely tight with recent gas prices and grain prices and this is my only vehicle. I really can't afford to take this to the shop unless I choose to have my family of six not eat for a few weeks. And I have to pick up hay within two days which has gone from 25 a bale to 30 in the last month. I only say this because I really need to try to fix as quickly as possible. I was on this forum before but couldn't seem to find my account.
Oh, one more observation, I was heading down the mountain and I usually turn off the overdrive to keep my speed around 65. With my foot off the gas and the overdrive off, it was missing at the rate of about 1 time every 2 seconds roughly. And this whole things seems to be slowly getting worse over the last two weeks.
Reason I ask is these engines use hydraulic pressure to drive the injectors and if it's way low, the symptoms you describe make me think it's struggling to maintain high pressure oil.
