Restoring Gas Tank
I just finished sealing my rear tank for the truck. This tank was in really good shape. Very minimal rust inside. To the point that I wondered if I was wrong to do the POR-15 routine, but I did the full job (degreaser x2, etcher, sealant).
My question is for the 'next' tank - auxilary. Should I do some abbreviated version of the above? It is also in good condition. Not rust free though. Like so many others, the prior owner seemed to never have switched tanks. The valve selector is seized on main tank.
This truck sat undriven for many years...so I'm replacing pretty much all fuel related components as I go....if that makes a difference in advice.
So would folks recommend I STOP with the POR-15 degreaser for the second tank? I've heard from the Internets that sealing a tank is not ideal unless it has significant rust. I've always just sealed it thinking it couldn't hurt. But bubbling etc is always a concern if it hasn't been totally prep'd correctly.
By the way, this was surprisingly hard to do. If I had the cash, I would probably have just replaced the rear tank. Then again, I wonder if the replacement tanks are as high quality. My gauge suggests this stuff is 11 gauge. Impressive.
