Gas Tank options: keep or replace?

I have a '73 F100 2WD with only the rear main tank installed, and will keep it that way. One tank is enough for me.. Thinking about replacing that tank, but not sure of all the options. Might consider original equipment or even plastic. I would also like to know how to tell if the current tank is OK to reuse, so any inspection tips would be greatly appreciated. Some surface rust is present on the outside of the tank.

THANKS!

My tank had a very small hole on top and was a little rusty. I am restoring mine with all original parts. I took it to a well known tank refirbisher who does everything to the tank you can think of. He coats the inside and out with sealant. Cost me $200 and I have a LIFE-TIME warranty on it. I really liked the deal and outcome.

I'm a huge fan of just replacing the tank. Every drop of gas that goes through your carb starts at the tank. If cost is an issue, then do the very best you can to ensure your tank is completely rust free. If you can spring for a tank, then I would recommend a new one if you have any doubt that rust may be lurking in there somewhere. My dad had trouble on and off for years with his carb. After he had passed away and I started restoring it, I found rust was flaking off and getting in through the filter and building up. Sometimes it doesn't happen all at once and a hole appears. Rust starts years before you ever see it flaking a little at a time. Just my experience. You can tackle it many different ways, it is basically what's it worth to you.

Thanks for the responses...

Looks like a new one is about $130 for steel. Don't know if anyone has any experience with plastic tanks, but I think I am leaning towards replacement of one sort or another. All the little parts add up though, I am finding out!

replaced one on my 78 bronco with a plastic tank from bronco grave yard they were the cheapest and have not had any problems. One issue with the old original tanks that over the many gallons of gas that have been through them they accumulate a lil gunk in them. With this new ethanol gas or even gas with 10% ethanol it strip all the old gunk off. the e-gas can also accumulate moisture from the air if it sits up for too long. I like the plastic wont ever rust out. Yes maybe crack but whatever. Always some kind of problem no matter what you get.

Is the plastic tank dimensionally the same as the steel tank? Is it mounted the same way? And associated hardware? I'd be interested to know more Thanks!

I purchased a steel tank from Dennis Carpenter, but I have heard nothing but good things about the plastic tanks. Try a search on google and see what comes up. This is a wonderful board, but the search engine leaves a little to be desired.

yes the plastic tank was a direct replacement for factory. there was two strap on top of tank and my bronco had a large pan/shield that held the bottom. put in a new sending unit too. original tank was full of crap n rust so had no choice but to replace. 33 gallon tank. found that the plastic was cheaper than some of the metal ones. bronco graveyard has truck parts too check them out. also lmctruck.com

Just pulled the trigger on the plastic tank from Bronco Graveyard, without emissions. So I bought a venting gas cap too. I expect to reuse my filler hoses and sending unit, but also bought new sending unit seal and ring.

I figure I am not going completely stock, might as well not worry about getting rust in my newly rebuilt 302 and new carburetor.
