oil change mess

I am so tired of cleaning up the mess resulting for changing the oil on my 1978 F-100, 302. I have tried shoving in a funnel, cardboard tubes, and whatever else I thought might work - nothing! The oil simply spills out all over the cross member.

I looked online at the Fomoto drain valves, but I do not think there is enough clearance for those.

What have some of you used that actually worked?

Thanks, CB3

I feel your pain.

Thinking about it, I'd like to do this , but I'm too busy doing this .

If you think draining oil is a nightmare, wait until you drain coolant out of the block.

I've had EZ valves on the block, radiator, auto tranny, and oil pan for several years. ''F$$king brilliant'' would be an understatement.

I looked at both EZ and Fumoto at the time, but I can't remember why I chose EZ.

Maybe because of these hose ends :

https://ezoildrainvalve.com/index.html

I connect a hose, open the valve, then walk away for a coffee.

I have a hole cut in the cross member directly below the drain plug. There's enough room between the I beams to get a drill in there.

I can take photos and post 'em up tomorrow if you want.

At least the crossmember won't rust away.

I haven't installed mine yet but I picked up F101N Fumoto valve based on how much a co-worker likes the one he installed on his Jeep. He says it takes a bit longer to drain but it's not so long that it makes it a chore. I did spring for the hose kit, turns out I could have just used a piece of clear hose from the hardware store, the white elbow does snap on nicely but hose pushes on just as easily. The F101N is the long nipple version, if it does not clear the cross member, I can remove the nipple and adapt something that will fit the threads. Also, be sure to use the part selector to make sure you get one that fits your engine. I don't know if the F101 fits a 302, it does fit a 390.

The fumoto that I installed on my Dads truck worked great. Never leaked. The price of no mess was well worth it, if you think it's a little slow, it is compared to the deluge from dropping a plug. Spend the extra time greasing and lubing moving parts instead of mopping up the mess. Just my thoughts.

On my truck, the previous owner drilled and tapped a hole for a second oil drain plug in the front of the oil pan.

Fumoto valve in action. Note I'm doing this on carpet. Not a drop spilled from the pan. The filter was a different story of course, I did remove the mat before removing the filter. And I dropped the hose into the bottle when I pulled it from the valve.
Installing the valve required lifting the engine about 1" which in my case was easy as it was still on the hoist at that point. It's a bit of a pain to reach the lever but not impossible. The white plastic bit and the hose are part of the hose kit. The hose actually fits on the nipple without the white part so you could get away with just hose from the hardware store. I went for the one and done plan and bought both at the same time. This is a F101N valve on a FE 390 with a Ford oil pan in a 1974 SuperCab F250. I don't know if the pan is original, it does have a Ford part number.

Look at you guys with your fancy drain plugs

I've been using the same old disposable 9x13 aluminum baking pan that I punched a hole in one of the corners for like 10 years now. I just cram it in under the drain plug and shape it to direct the oil to the hole. And the best part is it fit's every car. Eventually it'll probably tear, it is getting pretty beat up, but i still have at least 3 or 4 more from the multiple 3pks i bought like 20 years ago for under $5. They also make good parts bins, cleaning trays and drip pans for minor leaks.

I do use aluminum baking pans when changing the oil on the blowers at work. It never occurred to me to do the same at home.

Check out ValvoMax. https://www.valvomax.com/

A little pricey, but might be worth a look. It looks like they don't need quite as much clearance as the Fumoto valves.

Those are similar to the valve on some of our Aerzen blowers. You can't drain the oil without the fitting and there may not be enough room on my truck, it's a long reach just to get to the Fumoto valve lever and you will get dirty doing it but at least you don't need the hose. Not using the hose does defeat the purpose of the valve though.
