Oil Change

What do you do with your oil after an oil change?

15 quarts is a lot to keep around! And besides, my oil drain bucket only hold 15 qts.

My town has a recycling container. I just dump my oil into their tank.

But do you do it after every oil change or do you have a big barrel where you store your used oil and only do it periodically?

Every oil change. I have a 5 gallon bucket that I put under the truck and drain the oil into. Sometime before the next chanage I dump it.

Depending on the state, but places such as PepBoys and Kragen auto parts will take used oil.
Keep in mind, some will not take 5 gallon amounts.

I drain into a low profile 15 quart saucer type platic oil conatiner has the screw lids on it for pouring, venting, etc.

You can buy one at Checkers and, it holds about 15 1/2 quarts. Checker also takes used oil here in Phoenix.

I use a 7 1/2 gallon bucket with lid that hydraulic fluid comes in. I get them from work, but most oil places will give you a used 5 gallon bucket/lid for free. I have 6 buckets, and when they all get filled, I take them (and my filters) to the recycler for a whopping $0.16 / gallon.

I save the plastic gallon jugs the oil comes in and refill it with the old oil. Then I leave it at Checker or AutoZone for recycling.

Tennessee has a requirement that all auto stores, and service places take as much oil as the public can recycle. I take mine to the dump, they have a barrel.

Thanks everyone.

I don't think the wife will let me keep 50 gallons of old oil on hand like cgl but they are all useful hints.

I have a local guy that uses it to heat his work shop. He comes and picks it up and supplies me with a barrell to put it in. That saves him money on heating fuel and me time and money disposing of it.

I guess a guy could put in a heater and heat his own work shop.
