The 205 is by far the best transfercase ever made, could use a better low range though like the 203 then it would be perfect. I have a 205 in my truck and has never failed. Hey even my 2004 Jeep has a true shift lever.
If you dont have to lock in the hubs it aint a 4x4.
For strength I too like the NP205s, my 77 Highboy has a divorsed NP205. But my 84 F150 4x4 has the NP208 which is also a manual lever on the floor. It has an aluminum case and is chain driven, allthough not as stout as the NP205, I have had ZERO problems with it. I like it because I can pop it into 4hi even when I am still moving, which is nice in the winter time. I just leave the hubs locked when the roads are bad, then I pop in 4wd whenever I need it. One of my buddies Dad uses NP208s in all his snowplow trucks, and they hold up great. I have read the NP208 is popular for it's deeper low range gearing. I have worked this truck pretty hard in the six years I have owned her, and still to this day have never had a single transfer case problem with my NP208.

Or if it's like mine and the original **** has been changed, you can tell simply by the shift pattern. The NP205 has 4 select postions where the NP203 has 5 (including neutral).
You could also just look at the tag on the T-case. On my NP205 it's fastened near the front yoke.
