Due to unfortunate circumstances i have recently aquired a 1979 F250 with the I6 and 4X4 manual transmission, while this is not my first ford truck (certainly not the las either) I have never had to deal with this kind of 4X4. I have been spoiled by the push button in my 93 F150. The former owner has passed on and left no instructions on how to shift the 4 wheel dr and the shifter handles have been taken off so if anyone can give me a general layout or diagram that would be great. I think if i can at least get that i can probably shift by feel.
NP205 (parttime 4wd) transfercase is from front to back 4L, N, 2H, 4H. If you have NP 203 transfercase which is full time 4wd (no locking hubs) Lo lock, Lo, N, Hi, Hi lock.
wait....i have locking hubs but on the **** it has Lo Lock, Lo, N, Hi, Hi Lock
im a little confused now. cause ive heard that mine is all time 4x4 but i didnt kno cause i have locking hubs. the guy i bought it from picked it up from his dads farm cause he didnt want it ne more and he said somthin bout his dad havin the 4x4 installed by ford after like a yr after he bought it or somthin like that. so now i dunno what to think. its a 76 F-150 with a 360

Most definately, that's why I don't want a newer truck. Your truck has a full time 4wd transfer case in it, but lockout hubs have been installed sometime during the trucks life, so actually you have part time 4wd when the hubs are not locked.
You ought to hear the owners of that new push button crap screaming about the units sticking or not working with huge repair bills to fix them. The best way to make things work is to use the KISS method.
I pulled a brand new Explorer out of the mud about a year or so ago, he got stuck because the actuating motor on the transfer case shorted out and it popped out of 4wd. The guy was ticked to put it mildly! I distinctly remember him saying..."Damn I never should have sold my old 1980 Bronco, it had the lever on the floor and lockout hubs...that thing never got stuck!" That is just another reason for me to stick with manual hubs and transfer cases!
This kind of leads to a question I have. I have a 79 f-150 w/ 4spd and lock outs (np 205?). What would be the shift pattern in 4wd if you were to go from lowest to highest, i.e. 1st 4lo, 1st 4hi, 2nd 4lo, 2nd 4hi, and so on? just curious, thanks.
thanks matt thats exactly what im looking for and its correct too, thanks. I need to find a manual style 4X4 engager for my truck now that its more manly and what not.
