I'm scared to post this for fear of the worst, but could yall let me know whether or not this would be considered "excessive blow-by"? I did the "oil cap test", and it does fine, but the amount of smoke I find concerning. 1999 Ford F-250 Super Duty 7.3L 4x4 w/ 270xxx miles https://youtube.com/shorts/oxnW0XlIjJI?feature=share
Is that bad blow by? I thought the cap would flip up like an acrobat if it was bad.
Yes, there's enough pressure to lift the oil cap, and the exhaust chugging, uneven cranking, and the smelly fuel/oily exhaust to go with it, as for flipping the oil cap that one with a hole in a piston or broken rings.
Seen worse. Lumpy/uneven cranking with the starter is another clue one cylinder is has lost compression for some reason, but it could also just be all 8 of them are losing a little more that ideal past the rings and nothing is "broken". You'll notice on a cold engine there is almost no blow-by gasses. The thicker oil room-temp oil seals it up better. At full operating temp you will see the most blow-by. Buddy of mine bought a 6.0 with a completely blown cylinder and there was a ton of blue smoke out of the tailpipe, dip stick would come shooting out of the tube under high boost, and taking the oil cap off it looked like a steam locomotive. Used a lot of oil and had a huge dead skip in the starter. If yours doesn't use oil excessively I wouldn't worry about it.
