Blue Smoke

I have a '02 F-250 SD with the V-10 38150 miles on it. I recently noticed a little blue smoke coming from the tailpipe at start up. It only lasted for a second or two and then immediately went away. Is this something that I should worry about or is it normal since the 5W-20 oil is so thin? Thanks in advance.

Mine does it and many have reported it here, but I don't consider it "normal" although Mr. Ford does.

My Ford maintenance guys said the V-10 could burn/use a quart in 2,000-3,000 miles and it would be considered normal by Ford. Mine does it with a bigger blue puff if the truck has been sitting for several days. I drive 2 different vehicles, so I always watch for the "puff" when I get back in my Super Duty.

OBTW, I have 40,000 miles on my 2001 and I have it on record with Ford that it does the blue puff on start-up just in case I have a warranty issue.

Thanks, I don't think it's anything to be overly concerned with. I just wanted to check the forum for a little piece of mind.

I know some old school mechanics that have said that burning a little oil is not that bad; it helps to keep parts lubricated. My old GMC would use a little oil between changes especially if i towed a lot.

My 00' F250 V10 does the same thing, I was worried about it at first and took it back to the dealer I bought it from. The mechanic there told me it was leaking valve guides and my cost would be almost $1000 to fix it. I told him bull***** that it should be under warranty, we argued or my wife argued and we lost of course. I did more research and found what a common problem it is for the V10's and I'm glad I walked away from the dealer without spending the money. And from what I've read that wouldn't have fixed the problem anyway. I'm not loosing oil between changes at all and many on the board here believe it to be a fuel issue not an oil issue anyway. Just my .02

Thanks guys, I didn't think it was anything to really worry about. Just wanted to make sure.
