1982 302 8 cyl. Oil spits out around the oil cap, Oil cap is new, also white smoke come from the hose that lead to the air filter.
The engine run very good , no noise or anything from the motor.
There is no smoke from the tail pipe, The oil some/ how come from the oil cap onto the vale cover onto engine and this also cause the motor to smoke as well. When at a stop light you can see the smoke, not much but i no that smell as well. Please help me here!
well do you only want to rering it or rebuild the heads and put new bearings in it. if i was you i would go the whole 9 yards and get it all done. why just stop at first base when you can run home. if you just rering it and there is a lot of miles on that motor then sooner ar later you are going to have to pull the motor again and put new bearings in it. the heads you don't have to do but i recomend it. the machinist is going to talk you into it if you don't get convinced by me.trust me mine did and i am glad.now i have a newly hopped up 302 that i built myself.if you don't have to get the cylinders bored and buy new pistons then it won't be over 1000 dollars.lets see. 60 dollars for std. rings 40 for main bearings( i forgot how much they cost but i am guessing on the main bearings) rod bearings 35(guessing that too) new gasket set will be like 70-100,rebuilt heads 60-100,new pre 71 timing set 15-70. i got my block bored so when they do that they put new cam bearings and freeze plugs in so i don't know the price for those seperated.i also had my crank turned so you may have to do that if there are any deep gouges on you crank. you might need to bore and buy new pistons if there are any deep gouges ar ridges in the cylinders.it would be best if you got your cylinders micced to see if they are the same size as they used to be. mine cost maybe 1500-1650 to rebuild since i had everything done. i had the crank turned, the block bored .060 over, hyperuetectic speed pro coated pistons rebuilt heads without porting, mellings performance cam with a lopey idle, mellings high volume oil pump, stock cloyes double roller timing set weiend avenger intake 1406 edelbrock carb edelbrock sureflow air filter and a chrome dressup kit. it has some good power but i need a stall convertor. the reason for the pre 1971 302 double roller chain is because all the timing sets after that had a 4 degrees retard which made motors not accelerate as quickly and not burn the fuel at it's best.
And like f100guy said its not wise to try and patch one up, because you will be back into it sooner than you want to be.
You may get lucky and find a good used rebuilt 302. But definitely you will want to hear it run and look for the signs yours has.
It all boils down to what you are willing to put up with and how much you want to spend. It could run for quite a while like this. But the performance will steadily degrade if it hasn't already.
