I recently purchased a transmission temperature gage for my 2002 E350/4r100 transmission. The directions say the probe/sending unit can be installed in the test port on the side of the transmission,in the line to the cooler,or to install a bung in the pan. Which is preferable? Does the test port allow fluid to flow past it? or is it mainly for pressure testing? thanks for any replies.
I recommend the test port. That will give an accurate reading of the internal trans temperatures.
When I was a transmission engineer at Ford I had many transmissions that were instrumented for temperatures. I had thermocouples all over the insides. I also always had one in the test port. The test port is generally hotter than the pan temperature, and cooler than the outlet to the cooler. It is a good average temperature to indicate how the transmission handles the heat.
