I just got back from a cross country trip and gladly is was uneventful regarding the performance of the truck. While in Montana with night time temps in the low 20's the truck cranked over more slowly than usual and I had white smoke until is warmed up. I replaced the batteries (Motorcraft) in February of this year so I don't think the batteries are the issue. I also replaced the GPR in Montana but no difference in cold start up. The slow turnover is the issue - could the starter just be worn/tired out after years of reliable service? If it is a new starter which starter(s) should I be looking at. I've seen the gamut of what available from the cheap to the most expensive - I'm leaning toward the starter offered by Summit Racing. I welcome any thoughts.
The old planetary style starters in our trucks are bad.
Need overdrive starter.
Can go as simple as putting a SuperDuty one in, which will be better and bolt right in.
Or you can go with the 6.7 starter like I did. The 6.7 starters are a bit beefier than the super duties.
But you gotta know where to get them cheaper, otherwise you spending like 600.
Anything beats a crapped starter. Agree with cables, easy way to check is touch them while cranking and see if hot...that means bad and full of corrosion.
As mentioned, you have several options. One thing I considered when I did mine was availability. How easy can I replace it if I am on the road somewhere. That was the driving factor for selecting the super duty gear reduction starter. It starts like a champ and spins over really fast. If I do have a problem, then the Irish parts houses usually have one in stock and it will be free to swap it out.
