Replacing my ignition switch

It's worn out. I've ordered a new one. I watched several YT vids on replacing it and it seems pretty straight forward. For those with experience with this are there any pitfalls I should look out for?

Thanks
David

Good to see your still driving the 7.3L David. Below is a link to a recent thread with details about the innards of the ignition switch.

Perhaps @udsuth78 would be able to warn you about potential pitfalls.

Thanks Sous for the quick reply and the link, that is great information. Yes my faithful 7.3 has 322K and I still love it!

I guess I should have been specific. I am replacing the key cylinder. Sorry, my bad.

Nope it's pretty much just the easy, but if you can't stand that constant dinging bell as long as the key is in the ignition, you can disconnect that bk/pk wire and never have to hear it again. Silence is golden.

Good to hear about the truck!

Oh... Ya... The key cylinder is super easy... Once you have it out, you will look back at the spot the cylinder was and say "is that it?"

Thanks to Udsuth78 for chiming in too, he is always a good source of information.

If you want to keep your old key so that you can use one key for doors and Ignition Then when you get the new one take both of them apart and swap the wafers over from the old 1 into the new 1. Just go slow and watch as you take things apart there's a ball bearing or 2 and a couple of Springs that want to get away. I did the same thing when my when my original cylinder broke and it takes about 15 minutes.

Here's a video. It's not exactly the same cylinder and you don't need to read key cuts because you will just be taking wafers out and placing them in the same place in the new cylinder. It will give you a good idea of how

Since working in the area pull off the top of the steering column and inspect the wire to the Tow/Haul switch. It can rub thru and short out. If you find a spot of wear now is a good time to protect it.

Just reporting back.......

Changed the Key Cylinder yesterday. Very simple. Thanks for everyone's help. I'll know soon if this fixed the issue or if I need to replace the Ignition Switch.
