Hey everyone, here's another KAM thread! But none of the extensive searching I've done has answered my questions. Keep Alive Memory code P1633. Its a 2006 F250 6.0 auto. This light and code came on when I changed the tune in my truck (I actually haven't tried to change the tune back being I didn't think software would cause the CEL, but I could be wrong!). As soon as I delete the code it flashes of for less than a second and is back on. Basically just flashes off very quickly and the code is back. I had older batteries in the truck that were dead after winter so I put new batteries in the truck after this code came on hoping that would fix it. I've also checked and cleaned the terminals as well as checked the fuse and for 12v power at the KAM fuse under the hood. I have duel alternators on the truck but once the glow plugs shut off the truck has 13.6 volts or so. Not until like 10-30 seconds after the truck starts however, I've read its the glow plugs still being on. Maxium4x4 had sent me a PDF step by step test for this but its for a 6.4 so it wont quite help me.
I had this code once before as well as the wrench symbol on my dash and found that my 5v reference was getting 12v in turn making the truck rev on its own and some other really wonky stuff. Found some corrosion in my engine harness plug at the computer so I cleaned them all and that went away. The P1633 went away on its on soon after that. But I never found the route cause for the KAM code. This was about a year and a half ago.
Does anyone happen to know which pin on the computer is the KAM 12v to check to make sure I do have voltage there? I didn't see anything referencing it on the pinout I found of the 6.0 3 connector PCM. I have also driven the truck a couple hundred miles since I changed the batteries hoping the CEL would clear itself, but it didn't. The truck runs fine minus what an issue I've been fighting for a while which I think is a sticking PCA solenoid in my trans because sometimes the truck holds second basically until I let off the throttle then jumps to DISPLAYED 4th (actually 5th) gear then bounces down to 2nd then 3rd. Sometimes even to 1st first. Which is super annoying but that's a different issue I think. I just wanted to bring it up in case there is some odd connection.
I didn't! It went to my spam so I just found it! I had sent a message to Yahiko too! But you should attach it again here so anyone else with this issue may be able to find it as well! So that connector is different than the 3 on the PCM? I'll have to look up the location of that one.
There are only 3 connectors to the PCM. The connector diagram I sent is one of the three (C1381a). As I stated in the email. It is the connector on the left when looking at the PCM from the engine bay.
For P1633: Keep Alive Power Voltage Too Low (if batteries and alternator are ok):
Be sure to visually check all PCM connections on C1381a for corrosion, looseness, or pushed out pins. This is the PCM connector closest to the firewall.
If everything above looks ok ....... with ignition on and engine off, measure the voltage between the C1381a connector pin 40 (harness side) and ground. It should be 10.5 or higher.
If it isn't 10.5v, then check the wiring to pin 40. It is a dark green wire, it comes from Fuse 10 (F1.10) of the Battery Junction Box (under the hood).
Last resort if above checks out - is the PCM (highly unlikely IMO).
Well I can't find the drive that goes into my laptop and worse still I can't find the CDs that have the Ford Workshop programs on them.
I had my hands on them about 2 weeks ago. So they are likely put some place "Safe". I will find them I also see my backup on the desk
next to the laptop so I can pull it from there. Or if I get really desperate I can plug the very old PC in and get it from there.
Okay, so some interesting info. I have 12 volts and the KAM pin as I should. BUT just for the hell of it, I loaded the old tune and the CEL went away on the dash. HOWEVER when I actually check the codes it is still there. So must be Nate at Windrunner selected certain codes to not display the CEL if thats possible? For example, I have converted my fan to a mechanical clutch and the 2 fan codes are always there but never a CEL on on the dash. So who knows how long I've had the KAM code.
I can try borrowing a different computer and see if that fixes it, but I doubt thats the issue.
Also, I'm betting its 100% a ****ty coincidence, but I started getting a #7 cylinder high voltage and missfire this weekend too just before I was about to take the truck. So thats super frustrating as well. But I dont think thats related.
Is the KAM circuit really as simple as this? Its just battery power to a fuse into the computer as 12v? It doesn't go anywhere else? Or serve any other purpose as basically the memory power of the computer?
I have 12v at the pin on the connector for the computer when I shove a paperclip in there and test the pin with it. I wonder if the female connector is just loose from time and its not getting a good connection. Maybe I'll shove a small piece of solid wire in there to tight the hole up
You don't want to use a paperclip. It can damage the pin.
There is a inexpensive tool to test the connections.
You can also back probe the connections.
I'll have to get back to you later as I am literally sitting in the middle of a cat fight.
My two girl kitties are in the room with the older one on top of the bed the the little
once under the bed. Tails are calm and ears up so things are calm at the moment.
