Rear-end is gone!!! 88 4X4 LSD
Do you guys remember when I asked about a shaking upon acceleration about a week ago? Well, it has shown itself to be the rear diff.
The carrier that is bolted to the ring gear cracked at the ring gear and sheared off. The spider gears then proceeded to "chew" the broken pieces of carrier. I pulled it apart Sunday.
What I need now is a name of a company that can sell me the whole ring/spider/carrier assembly for a reasonable price. If they want the core, that is fine, but it is unusable. I need everything that is inside the diff. If someone can estimate the price too, that would be helpful.
BTW - I need the LSD type diff.
Thanks,
Randy

Hey depending on were you are, I have an F250 Heavy Duty rear end complete, with 4.10 Lockers on it, that I changed out of my truck for a 3.54.

I am in Wisconsin so shipping would kill me unless they were free (yeah right!!).
It looks like Summit has what I want, but it isn't cheap!! If anyone has the complete Diff (or any parts) that will fit in the 8.8" Ford rear end and willing to sell them cheap, I am all ears.
e-mail me.

I'm using an 8.8 from an '84. They started using them in '83 and continued on up. The only things to look for is the gear ratio, which if stock shouldn't be too hard to find, and rear abs, if you have it. I don't know if yours has rear abs or not, but a haynes manual should tell you what year they started using it. If your brake parts are in good shape you might save some money by not getting them with you axle. I figure I got a good deal on mine because they didn't figure it was complete without brakes. Good luck. Mark.

There are no 3.55 LS with ABS axles in the whole Milwaukee area. I settled on getting just the carrier with LSD for (hold your breath) $200!!
Every junkyard wanted $400-$500 for the axles without brakes. You got one hell of a steal!!
Anyway, I am installing the new carrier and then I'm going to have a professional set the Pre-load and shim the clutches, etc... Anybody know what this could cost?
Later.

Just for all or you out there, the rear ends complete will interchange from 1987 thru 1997 F250s. You can use an 87 - 97 rear end in an older truck like 80 thru 86, but you can not use the older rear end in a newer truck. The main difference is that the 87 and up has the sensor conector for the anti lock brakes, it also has what is called floating drums, where you can remove the drums like a car without taking the axle off, 80 thru 86 do not have this feature.

I'm assuming from the past messages that we are talking about a 8.8 semi floating rear axle, used in the 1/2 ton trucks. The full floating axles used in the 3/4 - 1 ton trucks would require pulling the axles to remove the drums, but not the 1/2 ton 9" or 8.8" models. Mark.

No not the 1/2 ton, but the 3/4 ton axles, after 87 ford went to a floating drum in a full floating axle. This is true even in the 1 Ton F350. You can now remove the drum without having to remove the axle. GM has even gone to this type of drum on there newer trucks.

Rear-end is gone!!! 88 4X4 LSD
I stand corrected. I assumed from the past messages that this was a 1/2 ton truck. I thought the 8.8 was only used in them. I guess it must have been configured as a full floater as well. My chilton manual only covers '76 thu '86. They commonly used the ford 10 1/4, as well as the dana 60, and I believe the 70 rear axle in those years. Mark.

I looked back to the original message a few pages back and this is a 1/2 ton truck. It has an 8.8 as we all know. The drums were alwayse removable. Matter of fact you cant pull the axle without first removing the drum. This axle was used in the 1/2 ton trucks, the late model mustang 5.0, and the ranger/explorer with 4.0L. 'nuff said.
