Crank case vent/ air box mod

What do we do maintenance wise with the valve cover mounted crank case vent? Also if I was to go with a Intake mod and ditch the stock air box what does one do with the crank case breather?

Most of us vent the crank case doghouse to atmosphere and block the hole in the turbo tube.
Then run a 6637 kit which you can pick up from riffraffdiesel which will have the pipe and clamps as well as the filters.

it will stink more, not worth the effort IMO unless you want a nice clean intercooler but i think the oil prevents corrosion YMMV

i Would consider keeping it. There are a lot of threads out there on the vent. In the end, keeping it is a lot less work and less messy.

i have yet to find a compelling reason to get rid of it

Thanks all , the air filter and tube will arrive next week I'll decide at that point what to do with the vent. Not sure if the filter I ordered will have a port for the vent hose.

Racor and IH made a vent/filter for our engines seems kind of controversial , I'm kinda on the pro side of this mod but still thinking .

I run Mishimoto CCV catch can that goes into the can and puts fumes right back into the motor, just keeps the oil from going back through the intake is all. Very recent mod.

When I put my intercooler in, I flipped the CCV doghouse and piped it to the rear of the truck - the smell was horrendous! If you stopped to fuel up, and left the truck running it wasn't pleasant. After watching a video from KC Turbos on the subject I changed it back. Any back pressure on this can cause issues. The catch can I run now can handle the flow coming through - just need to be aware of oil levels which I haven't checked yet but it's only been maybe 200miles ago?

The outlet from the breather into my air intake was clogged. My guess was condensation gumming up the oil. I believe the truck sat quite a bit with the previous owner and never got to operating temps to keep the oil flowing nicely. I'd suggest taking a peek at it every once in a while to make sure that doesn't happen. Easy check! And I believe this was causing the oil to leak in other locations due to pressure buildup.

I've never done anything with them but put a barb on my downpipe and hooked it directly to it. I've done this on my turbo C10, turbo D100, turbodiesel Ram, and Turbodiesel Toyota and all are fine.

I'll most likely do it to the Ferd too.

I can tell you from the thumbnail that is NOT the way to do it. hahaha

You want to run the vent hose up and then back down unless you're running a catch can.

its oil vapor coming out, and you dont want to give it just an easy path to escape, you want the gases to escape, not the oil.
Usually people run it up and over the break booster, it's just enough to keep oil coming out the tube.

The metal mesh inside the doghouse gets full of oil and doesn't release the oil, reducing air flow and practically defeating the purpose of having it run into the turbo other than to suck oil directly into the turbo.

So, Here is this.

Most diesel engines vented to atmo when this engine was designed, including this motor. IH didn't design it to re-route back into the intake, that was a ford thing.

The biggest issue with the setup from the factory is that it can cause back pressure in the crank case, as they have not quite done the venturi properly. (not sure why it thinks I spelled venturi wrong...)

You wont hurt yourself running it the stock way, but these motors do NOT like crank case backpressure, and they create far more backpressure on their own than the system can really clear out to be honest.
In a stock application, it's a lot more forgiving, but the more power you make, the more blowby your going to start dealing with.

My motor has 423 thousand on it now. I actually am venting both valve covers to atmo and it runs SOOO much better now. I don't have excessive blow by, but I have blow by and It's nice letting it breath.

But yeah, the gasses from the crank case, iew iew iew.

There really isnt' a great solution to the system, but a catch can in the system is far better if you can run it to get the oil off the turbo and out of your intake. Intakes are designed to move air, not oil. intake boots generally dont like to be "oiled", they come off easier that way. When you dont want it to, pulling a grade with a load.

Could you expand on your venting setup please?

I'm vented straight atmo through the doghouse which I gutted as well.

The mesh thing in there gets loaded with oil and then the vapor cannot escape.

It comes out and goes over the brake booster, then stays on incline to almost the rear axle.

If you run it straight down from the doghouse, you'll have oil drip out that thing eventually
