Motorcraft Synthetic

Is the 5W-40 full synthetic from Ford motorcraft the right stuff? I live in South Carolina.

Wanna make sure I’m buying the right stuff. It’s $73 for 5 quarts. 🙄🤦🏻‍♂️

Actually O’Reilly’s has it for $58 for 5 quarts. So I’ll get it from them

For a 6.7 PSD, it needs to meet this spec:

https://www.motorcraft.com/us/en_us/...m2c171-f1.html

Any oil on this list is appropriate. The owners manual can help you select the right viscosity. 5W-40 or 15W-40 should be fine for SC. I use Traveler brand 15W-40 from Tractor Supply. Until recently it wasn't hard to find it for $10/gal.

This. I don’t have a clue why Motorcraft 5w-40 is so expensive right now. Maybe a shortage?

Any approved 5w-40 Full Synthetic will work.

5w-40 is required for many owners and they don’t know it. Congrats on doing your research.

I’m just gonna do the Ford 15W40. I used to live in NH and would get 5W40. Now I’m in SC, and the 15W40 would be better

its not full synthetic, but no biggie. Only $29 per 5 quarts at O’Reilly’s

You do understand that the 15w40 Motorcraft oil is not synthetic, right?

Heck, I'm running the Motorcraft 10w30 Super Duty diesel oil, that's what came in the truck from Ford, and is approved for temps from zero to 100+.
And, my truck has been getting pretty good fuel economy lately, so plan to keep on the same track.

yes the 15W40 is not synthetic. No biggie to me. I was gonna burn full synthetic, but I’m not laying those ridiculous prices for it. 15W40 is fine with me.

Yeah I wouldn’t pay those prices either. Rotella T6 Full Synthetic Diesel oil is $23.44 a gallon at Walmart.

15W40 will meet temperature and B5 requirements. If you tow less than 1,000 miles per oil change or idle less than 10% of the time or any other qualifying requirements, then 15W40 will work per Fords specifications.

Of course most run 10w-30 regardless.

I can't bring myself to do it, but the Super Tech brand at Walmart actually meets the Ford spec.

I bought 3 gallons of Rotella T6 at Wally yesterday for $23 per gallon.

Ford doesn't make oil. They put out a specification, get bids to produce it, and go with the lowest bidder. It is a huge profit center for them, because their oil is nothing special.

I haul a small enclosed trailer for work daily. But that’s nothing big.

If it meets the spec, it will be indistinguishable from any other oil you might choose to use.

Yeah, it says moderate to heavy towing. Not sure what that means as far as weight wise.

I tow a 7500 lb camper, so far over a 1,000 miles in 30 days. I consider it moderate due to frontal
area even though it’s 1/3 max tow rate.

I could not find 5W40 anywhere, so got the 5 quart jugs from Walmart for $23 of the Motorcraft 10W30 Diesel oil instead. I don't have a need to go 15W40 either, and even that was hard to find locally.

You don’t use B5-B20 fuel?

Thats the requirements to go from 10w-30 to 15w-40.

Page 187 in your manual I think,
