Here are a couple Engine service Manual Supplements
83 - 87 6.9
88 - 93 7.3

I have both the 73 is over 2 x thicker and goes into more depth.
Both are good to have. the 6.9 is $25, I would jump on it, great price.

This is the 7.3 but in CD format

Here Paper book $66.59, got mine for around $30 couple years ago. Keep checking back prices fluctuate.

Injection pump issues?

Guys I've got questions about the injection pump. I just replaced my remanufactured unit since the one they sent started to leak, this one was missing the timing mark mostly except a little sliver left. I got it close to there but not quite perfect. I wanted to know if it's not timed right would it cause more smoke on cold starts? Would it also cause the truck to not rev out as high? The truck runs better now, and revs better other than shaking a bit more at idle.

Fuel pump left me on the side of the road... Facet swap?

I went of a trip to pick up some furniture about 60 miles one way. The truck ran great down there and 30 miles back. But I started having a serging issue in the last 30 miles. The truck was intermittently loosing power, and about 20 miles from home it died. No few, only 1 squirt out of the filter heads Schrader valve. I had it towed home after towing with it on the side of the highway for awhile.

Got home checked the fuel line from the tank to the lift pump by pulling it off. Instantly covered in diesel, lines not clogged. Decided to pop off the filter feed line, bone dry. Cranked the truck it started squirting fuel, so I plugged it back into the filter hit the starter for a bit and the truck ran for about 30 seconds. At that point it died and a little hole on top of the lift pump blew w a bunch of diesel out. If I crank it fuel just blows out the weep hole. Decided to check the filter by pulling the bottom drain, it was a little dirty but no sediment pieces.

My question is, why would the lift pump fail like that? I plan to use a facet pump now but I want to make sure nothing else in the fuel system could have caused the lift pump to die.

Just skimmed back through the thread to get back up to speed.
When you bought your new engine, did you put a new lift Pump on it?
If so, maybe it is faulty. The Diaphram could have ruptured.
I don`t know of a weep hole in the pump. If it is leaking, you need to replace it.
It sounds like it is not pumping fuel, and this is your source of air.

There is also the rubber hose going in to it, I call it the Curley Q Hose".
If it is old and cracked, especially where the Hose Clamps are, it can suck air,
or leak.

If you still want to put the facet pump on, be sure to remove the Lift Pump, and
install a block off plate. There is a block off plate for a chevy engine that bolts on
to cover the hole in the block.

I replaced the lift pump with a new Carter unit, along with the pig tail hose.

I would pull off the pump and investigate...you certainly should be able to figure out if the diaphragm failed, or the one-way valve, or...

i agree...knowing that the LP failed, and how it failed, would be nice.

Facet installed

I got the facet pump installed, visually my old lift pump looked fine but it seems like the leak was from around the edge of the diaphragm housing. The fuel filter had some junk in it, I believe from the old lift pump. Anyhow the facet got the truck running fine, but I am concerned it's not getting proper flow from the tank as it's fuel bowl will not fill up all the way. Here is a video link, is this normal?

No, I haven't gotten to that since pulling the tank is a major pain.

Got that right.

On some trucks, pulling the bed is easier than dropping tanks.

It is just, with your nice new engine...there are things you've never had eyes-on. Fuel pick-ups and plumbing, fuel senders, condition of the fuel and fuel tanks on the inside.

Just sayin'

Yeah that stuff seems to be the direction I'm heading. Since the drive train is mostly figured out, I can turn to fixing the rest of the truck.

FWIW, my GF and I were able to pull my 1990 8' bed. She is, however, pretty rugged.

I have pulled the bed about 4 times, not a big deal, just some steps to go through.
I used the Cherry Picker coming in from the rear. Lift it off drive forward, and then
set it on some saw Horses.
Place some card board, old Blanket between bed and cab so you don`t ding up things.

Here are some ideal doing a Google search.

I bought one of these Chicom frames.

Just need to get it balanced so it comes up straight.
I suggest to place some wood under the bed rail to
spread out the point of stress from lifting.

"Place some card board, old Blanket between bed and cab so you don`t ding up things" my trucks and old farm truck I think a couple more dents would really help tie in the fork lift stab on the front of the bed.

Thanks for the steps, I've used a cherry picker before although mine died lifting the diesel back into the truck. It folded the leg, and killed the cylinder (on the 1-1/2 ton setting). Luckily I have a brother, another friend and my brothers giant friend to call on for lifting the bed.
