I have a 390ci with ps using a 78/79 4x4 box. I had issues with fluid looking milky/light pink like pepto i thought water maybe?. I flushed it twice until clean fluid came out,ran it and discolored again. Then pump quit, so i installed a new ps pump, return hose, cooler and i cant get it bled? Blows out reservoir, Holds vacuum but in all positions (held at 20in vac for 30min with wheel to left/right/Center)but loses it when turning the wheels? I dont see any leaks. Would the steering box pull air in if the input or sector seal were leaking or internal seals in steering box? If theres a leak its not visable. Im going to put a new pressure hose on and bypass the cooler see it that helps, but it was doing it before the new parts. Appreciate any thoughts
Is it remanufactured pump? If so, I would not assume it is good unfortunately. Replacing the hoses is probably a good idea.
I Find it strange the fluid is becoming discolored. Makes me wonder if a hose is deteriorating.
I have never tried to hold vacuum and turn the wheels. I use a cheap air conditioner tool to pull a vacuum on my power steering system and then fill with fluid. 100% bleed in a few minutes every time I have used it.
It's probably just air, I have a Taurus that's about impossible to bleed. On that car when it starts to puke pepto, I just shut it down for the night, check level next day add a little to get it touching the stick while shut off, and try again. Sometimes takes twice. Maybe not the best approach but it works for me and no extra work just time.
Try taking the belt off pulley and turning it with your hand till it stops taking fluid and burping bubbles. Trying to use the motor only forces more air into the system
