hi all. my 69 f100 is ok to steer when i start it up. after a few minutes it's really tough. the fluid turns milky in a few hours of changing. i don't have a cooler on the pump. the engine is an 88 302 heavily modded, the pump is off of a late 80's f150( had to get the serp setup working right.) the hoses were custom made from ends of both set ups.
i'm thinking it's either the fluid gets too hot, bad steering box or king pins. when i bought the truck it had standard steering and i never drove it till it was switched over. the king pins have new covers on them so i'm assuming there new. when i had the truck in the air last time the wheels didn't woblle when i pulled on them top and bottom. the pump moves the fluid through just by spinning the pully.
i have a new ps box but don't want to put it on till i figure this one out.
thanks

Did you put in a Ford or Bendix box?
You really need a cooler, even just a simple couple loops of metal line in the airflow down on the frame would help.
i ordered a cooler that will fit in the rail right under the box so that will help with the heat. my friend say's it might be the pump putting air into the fluid. in a few weeks i'll get a pump and see if it works better.

Mark, You can purge the system of air. The only way to pump air is the lack of fluid. Fill the pump, raise the front of the truck, while making sure it is not in gear, start it and turn the steering wheel lock to lock about 20 times.
That should clear out any air in the system. Check the fluid level again.
You don't have to lift the front wheels but I don't care to grind the pavement.
the fluid level is fine. never leaks at all. i just changed the fluid about 500m ago. the fluid turned milky within a day or so. he says the pump my be worn too much and as it warms up and expands it bubbles up the fluid.
well i finally ordered a pump. i tried to clear the air with no luck. i also found a cooler that will fit in the frame for it. not i just have to wait till next weekend to put it all in.
then i can actually drive my truck. i had surgery sept 30 and there's no way i could turn the wheel.
thanks all
