A reflective Memorial Day

The title says it all. I am very appreciative of the freedom I have. I know many died to make sure I am able to live with the freedom I have. I dont take that for granted. I think it is especially important that us of a certain age be an example to those younger of what is what....I hope you will help me do that.

I was with an Australian unit in Iraq. They couldn't believe that Memorial Day for us was grilling out and drinking adult beverages. They look more of Anzac Day (their Memorial Day) as a day of morning. Very interesting.

It is an interesting observation. I think we as Americans (yes, I am generalizing, not pointing fingers) take a lot of things for granted. The unity and patriotism we had so briefly after 9-11 seems to be long gone, and is regrettable. I give my thanks and admiration for those who sacrificed all for us, and for me that includes not only our military, but our first responders and all manners of law enforcement in these troubling times.

We can enjoy Memorial Day because of our comrades who can't . When you smile on this day remember your friends that cannot. My wife and I always make it a point to go to the National Veterans Cemetery for the services as I think back I lost a few friends in Vietnam. Enjoy the day but thank the ones in heaven that cannot. I was one of the lucky ones that returned home.
