Okay gents, I need your help. I have a 2007 F350 with 330,000 miles on it. About a year ago, I replaced injector 1,3,5 & 7, because #3 was bad. My mechanic said that since we were gonna open up the engine, might as well do 1/2 of them and then the next time, if one on the other side goes bad, replace the other 4, and save tons on labor. Okay, several months ago, injector #3 was causing problems and he changed #3 out and warrantied it. Last Thursday, something shorted out #3 again. They don't think I could get 2 bad ones in a row, and they are talking about the changing out the wiring harness and if that didn't do it, they are talking about changing a part that would cost $600.00. They said it is a part that tells the injectors when to fire. Anybody got an idea of what could be causing the injector to fry?
The part being described is the FICM (Fuel Injector Control Module). It is the silver finned box mounted on the driver side bank of cylinders in the engine compartment. They are pretty common to fail. But to diagnose, requires use of a scan tool. Where your injectors being sourced from? Ford/Motorcraft or aftermarket? I wouldn't install anything other than Ford/Motorcraft. Especially when it comes to injectors.
At this mileage I might just replace both the FICM and injector harness. The parts aren't that much money, especially if your frying injectors.
Has your mechanic inspected the injector harness?
Also injector #3 is probably one of the hardest to plug in as it's got the main harness with a bunch of branches right above it. He's making sure the connection is securely made?
Here is what we settled on. He is going to change out the FICM and the wiring harness for that side of the injectors. He cannot figure out what and why that #3 injector is getting a pulse that is frying it.
Okay, here is what was found. Lifter failed on #3. It let the pushrod drop and kicked the rocker arm off. Mechanic is prescribing a reman. He will replace everything except the block, crank and heads. New pistons and upgrade camshaft. Between $12,000 and $13,500.00. Any input or ideas? Is it time to get rid of this truck?
