Running Lean (I think)

I've been lurking here for awhile now, trying to learn as much as I can. About a year ago I bought a 95 F-150, 351W, 168,000 miles. The truck runs good but CEL goes on and off pretty much constantly. I get somewhere between 12-14 mpg. I've run the codes and get 171 and 172. My mechanic says it is running lean but that I should just live with it. Curious what you guys think. Thanks.

Since you have both lean and rich codes, I would replace the O2 sensor first.

I would also inspect the harness.
