Guys, I have removed the fuel filters from a 97, 00 and 01 Rangers. However, I went to change the one on my 99 Ranger and cannot remove the old filter. It looks very simple. I used the filter tool I used on the others, and even went and bought a new one. They both said 90 up ford. I insert the tool and I feel the tension springs open but, it will not release the filter for anything. I finally gave up. My 99 has the metal fuel line connectors and not the plastic ones. They look straight and round. I'm at a loss. Any one else ever run into this? Any Ideas? Thanks in advance.
I did a search on "99 Ranger fuel filter removal" and it came back with a variety of results. Have a read through them to see what applies to yours the most.
lol, I have never had such a problem. I'm mechanically inclined and even made my first fileter tool to remove the 97 fuel filter. But, nothing I tried helped the 99. No matter thicknesses or lengths. Thanks
I've run into this before on the newer units. (aprox 3x) I even made the MAC man warranty out my tool believing it was to blame. I think Ford changed the o-rings they are installing on the fittings. They fit a lot tighter for some reason. All i did was soak the fitting down with some wd-40 for a while and work it in. Then i gave it a gentle but abrupt jerk. It popped apart damage free.
I have a '99 4.0L B4000 and had a similar problem. You can see my comments back around September in posts I had. One side popped loose but the other never would. One thing I found was three different versions of the special tools and I found one plastic one with the cone area that you insert into the filter slightly beveled that worked better than the others. I could not get either side off until I used that tool (I had tried another plastic one and a metal one) and it popped one side off but not the other. Unfortunately I think I had damaged the metal clip inside the connector trying to remove it with the other tools first though.
I eventually cut mine off at the flex hose on one side and used a repair kit that I got at an NAPA dealer. I had to modify it to work, too (in another thread). Good luck.
