1999 Ford Ranger 4x4 I was taking the oil filter off to change the oil like I have since day one when I bought this ranger new 4 years ago. The filter crushed and now the filter wrench won't help. I tried to use a long screw driver to remove the filter and that made it worse. Now it looks like I will have to remove the starter to get at the oil filter. Is the starter on the 99 ranger difficult to remove, and how is it removed. Thanks for any help on these two subjects.
From the top, take a long screw driver (or crow bar), put it on the
front (facing front of truck) part of the filter, and hit it with a hammer. This is how I loosen the filter on my 1999 3.0L all the
time, and it works great!!
Thanks for the welcome Bob, I did try the long screw driver and crow bar seems to be making the problem worse the filter is getting crushed more, by the way I have been changing the oil on my ford trucks for about 30 years and never had this happen, The filter is a fram, I will be going back to the motorcraft filters.
So sorry to hear that!! I only use Motorcraft oil filter on my Ranger, so I have only used the long screw driver technique on
Motorcrafts. I understand the metal in the body of the Fram is a
lot thinner, so I can understand you having trouble with the Fram.
Good move on using nothing but Motorcraft oil filters from now on!!
You don't say what motor you have, but regardless, removing the starter is still very straightforward on the Ranger. Disconnect the wires and unbolt the starter from the motor. No surprises.
