Haven't posted in quite a while. Unfortunately, this time is because I may need to get rid of my Excursion.
I'm in Fort Lauderdale, FL, and have a 2000 2wd with the 7.3l and ~370k on the clock. The engine runs very well, but the transmission completely let go on Saturday evening. I've got it at a reputable shop (J & D Diesel), and they quoted ~$4,000 for a rebuilt transmission, fully installed.
I'm having a hard time spending that cash, and wonder if it's time to move on. Diesel fuel prices sure don't help. I don't know what I could expect to get for a running 7.3l that needs a trans.
I would appreciate any advice you can offer. If you're in South Florida and know somebody who might be interested, send me a message.
Assuming it's rust free being from down south a 7.3 with a good trans and even those miles is still $15k+ . Have to ask yourself if you have money right now to get a comparable replacement
Taking the trans in and out yourself with drastically reduce the cost (probably by half or so). Then you can either enjoy your EX or sell it for top dollar.

I would love to do that, I simply don't have the space or tools to do it.
You have to under stand the source of these values... A forum that people own excursions. They are usually going to give you an over priced value. Realistically you are looking about 10k for a running 7.3 in excellent condition with those miles. Any scratches, dings, rust is going to lower that.
With the transmission people are going to have to take a gamble on if anything else is wrong so you got a quote of $4000 to fix, I would knock off another $2000 just in case other issue come up. So max I would ask in $4000 for the rig as is.
As a buyer this would still be a huge gamble. If everything works out then most you will be up is $2000 but this doesn't include time lost due to getting vehicle repaired.
I would post on facebook market place and see if you even get any hits for $4000. I am betting there won't be too many door knocks. But if there is, jack that price up, the buyers will stop bugging when you hit your limit.

I appreciate this perspective, thank you for offering it.
There's part of me that wants to get the rebuild & install for ~$3700, and then take my time choosing another vehicle over the next year while the transmission is still under warranty. This would at least buy me some time.
Do a reman tranny from Ford, you'll have the 3 year warranty. I did in 2016, and it's still going strong.
My mechanic suggested that, but also said he's unable to source a Ford rebuild anywhere right now. It's about the same cost to get a Jasper that also has a 3 year, 100k warranty.
Ford/Jasper are both 3yr warranty and ~$4200 installed.
Local shop rebuild is 1yr warranty and ~$3700 installed.

I would call a Ford dealer direct, this appears to be your part number, and is showing avail through the Ford site I use, and Tasca shows probable availability. 1C3Z-7V000-ERM
BUT, besides any of that, you will 100% sorry if you let go of your Excursion! NOTHING compares to it. Get a new tranny, or rebuild it and continue to drive it. In the next year or two, park it and keep it for towing/long trips and drive something around daily thats better on fuel, thats what I do!
Rust free, with a new Ford transmission, interior in good shape your 7.3l will bring well over $10k. I get people asking me all the time if I'd sell mine when they hear that 7.3 at the fuel stations and grocery stores. The 7.3s ARE in demand despite the diesel prices.
$4000 seems steep for a transmission rebuilt to OEM specifications. Although, with inflation and "supply chain issues", that may be the going rate at the moment.
You mentioned south Florida, there are places near Atlanta that do good work and then there is BTS in AR if you want to go premium rebuild if you plan to keep the Ex.
Suncoast performance (which is one of the big names in diesel transmissions) is in Fort Waldon beach FL, no need to go all the way to Atlanta unless you just want to.
