Glow plug issues
I changed my glow plugs due to age and hard Winter starting. I think they were Autolite glow plugs. My controller was clicking very fast and longer when key was turned (no wait to start light) on and engine was harder to start. I ran it for maybe 2x dozen starts and 1k miles. I tested the new glow plugs and some were bad. I tested continuity on the Glow plug leads and checked voltage and ground at controller. I put a test light on the controller output, it stayed on way too long. I put in a new Motorcraft controller. Same issue.
Went to change bad glow plugs and can’t get 5 out. I assume bulbous tip from being on too long.
2 Questions?
How do I get the glow plugs out and will tip debris in the cylinders be a problem?
How do I trouble shoot from here. I know the normal controller clicks by ear as I’ve had 3 7.3s.
i soak real good with penetrating oil and chuck the glow plug into a battery powered drill.
they slowly spin drill while pulling up and pushing back down with drill and spraying with penetrating oil. this will cut down the tip so you can get it out.
patience is the key here.
and once you get the old pugs out. put a set of motorcraft ZD-9 plugs only back in .
motorcraft glow plugs only in these engines. all the others are pure garbage and will burn out real fast, as you already learned.
with bad glow plugs they do not work. 1-2 bad will give you a 5-8 second WTS light. 3 or more bad and the WTS will only come on for less than 2-3 seconds.
a properly working glow plug controller with ZD-9 plugs will give you around a 15 second WTS, then cycle on/off (the clickingsound) for up to two minutes to keep the glow plugs hot to help heat the engine up.
