While waiting for Ford to get their schiznit together and get the truck I ordered in production, I am still "shopping" around, because, you never know.
I ran across a 2017 Platinum F350 and one of the very few dealers that actually does this, posted the GVWR and Payload stickers. Truck has 11.500 GVWR but only 2948 pounds of payload. Am I seeing this right? Isn't the 2017+ supposed to be lighter than the previous gen and have more payload? My 2012 King Ranch has 3441 pounds and is a short bed. This is a long bed and while there is a little more weight, I can't imagine it being 500 pounds heavier when it is supposed to be 700 pounds lighter!
Can anyone confirm that a 2017 Platinum has such a low payload?
That doesn't sound right at all! Are you sure you aren't looking at KGs vs LBs. My 2017 F350 DRW has a payload of 5,390 LBs, which would put it right at 2,400 KGs. I'm betting the numbers are listing metric not imperial and that's what you are seeing.
If I remember correctly on the super duty trucks Ford "reinvested" some of that aluminum body weight savings (350-400lb) back into the frame and running gear. So the payload won't see that much increase. Larger fuel tank and extras like panoramic sun roof (if applicable) can start eating into payload pretty fast.
A F-350 DRW likely has 14,000 GVWR. 14,000 - 11,500 = 2500 difference. Take the OP's truck in question payload of 2948, add the 2500 difference and you end up at 5448. Which is pretty close to your payload number for the DRW truck.
The curb weight for a base model F350 XL SRW 4x4 CCSB 6.7L is 7400lbs. Add the extra weight of the platinum package options and I can see where youll only have 3,000lbs payload.
I have not scaled any of the higher end trims but I have scaled XL RCLB 4x4 6.2L both new and prior generations and they are within 100lbs of each other. I remember watching a Ford interview back when the 2017 body style came out and the Ford Rep mentioned the weight savings they gained from the aluminum body they used to beef up the frame so the truck isnt really any lighter than the previous generation.
I use 8300lbs as a rough curb weight for 17+ CCLB w/6.7l of a Lariat and up trim. That Platinum is coming in a couple hundred lbs heavier but could have some heavy options. Your previous gen truck, along with being a short bed, had a smaller tank. That factors into the curb weight and payload cap. Difference in fuel weight alone is something like 154lb.

11,500 pounds is the GVWR for a F350 short bed. 12,400 pounds is the GVWR for a F350 long bed. My payload is 4033 pounds.

Can't confirm a Platinum has that payload but my 2017 F350 CCSB Lariat had a 3,500 lb payload. It was equipped with HD Front suspension. 5th wheel prep pkg, Lariat Value pkg, 18" wheels not moon roof.
My 2019 F350 Lariat had 3523 lbs of payload. It was similarly equipped but with standard suspension and Lariat Ultimate pkg.

That sounds about right. My 2017 Lariat Ultimate has a payload of right around 3200 lbs. The Platinum is heavier, so the payload is lower.
Thats what is confusing, it has the payload of an F250.

I looked several times thinking it was KG!
Yes it IS a long bed!
A Platinum really doesn't weight much more than a Lariat Ultimate. Maybe the seats are a few pound heavier, and maybe the wheels weigh a little more, but not THAT much more! I have a Platinum F150 with payload within 20 pounds of a similar optioned Lariat I used to own.
The one I ordered that is similarly equipped has been said to have over 4K of payload based on owners with the same configuration. Thats why I am stunned to see such low numbers. So I went back to my build sheet on the order, 12,400 GVWR. Theres 900 pounds difference. Still very surprised that it weighs that much more then the 2012 all steel King Ranch. The GVWR is 11,500 on mine but has 3441 payload.
