I got an 11 F150 Plat 6.2L and there was tapping/clicking noise at the top of the engine. Closer inspection reveals 4 coils are visibly sparking to the head to some degree. I coated the boots (inside and out) with Ford Dielectric grease and it runs much smoother now. I am wondering now if the coils should be replaced.
I'd replace the boots, resistor pills and wires. The COP themselves are probably fine.
Beat me to it. I replaced 2 coils only to find out the boots were shot. You can get the boots and pils from Rock Auto for about 6 bucks each. Wires and plugs I would stick with Motorcraft.
Right now I have 16 plugs, a set of wires and a set of boots sitting in a box waiting for the a nice enough day when I am home to replace the parts. I am at 75,000 miles on my truck at this time.
I just ran through this with my 2016. Found that I had 4 boots that were sparking. My issue was that after pulling the boots, the plastic fins on the coil had also disintegrated to the point that the new resistors wouldn't seat. I Ended up replacing all 8 to get it back to 100% and only have 2 of the old coils that are good enough to keep as backups. Planning to just start doing boots/pills every 30k as part of my routine maintenance. Just sucked to drop that much cash replacing low mileage coils that only had issues with the plastic.
