Hey crew,
I’ve had a very small amount of oil leaking for a while and it’s coming from the timing cover I believe. It doesn’t appear to be the notorious filter adapter leak but I’m not 100% sure. I narrowed it down to the timing cover after I put some dye in the oil and watched it for a week.
Now it seems a bit worse as it’s leaving a couple of drips in the driveway.
Thoughts on running a heavier oil in this 2005, 5.4 Triton or has any one used something like the Blue Devil oil leak products. I just don’t want to cause any damage to the motor or get a cam phaser tick by messing around with these products.
I'd imagine at this age and whatever the mileage is you can definitely run a heavier oil, but I'd say at best it might reduce your leak by 20%.....maybe 40% on a good day. Just a WAG, no real science behind those numbers.
I've been running a random mix of 10W30, 10W40 and 20W50 for the last ~25k to keep the hydraulic tensioners pumped up. If only I had a few days to devote to a full timing set......
170 000 miles on the engine and I plan to keep it for a second truck so I’d like to reduce the leak without throwing lots of cash at it. Truck is in amazing condition mechanically (aside from the leak) and cosmetically (aside from the notorious cab corner rot).
Maybe a additive will seal more than heavier oil, just not sure what effect that will have on the motor.
Thanks for the feedback.

I replaced the gasket on a 4.6, in a T-bird, was not fun. Those additives serve to soften seals mostly. With rare exception ... I have run nothing but 5w30 in my 5.4 since I bought it in 2009, but that T-bird is a '95, it's got some miles on it, valve guides are a little worn, it gets 10w30 pretty regular. I have two other 4.6s, they get5w30 now a days too, they are lower miles nicer cars. I do not even have any 5W20 ... it's all 5W30 on my shelves, I thought of this today while in my storage, so I looked. I pretty much skipped out of 5W20 when Ford sent a letter to my department in the '90s suggesting use of 5W30 in our police cars.
You're headed in the wrong direction. Heavier oil alone is not going to be of much assistance. You can try a Hi-Mileage oil in 5W-30 which will help. Just go to Walmart and pick one - a synthetic blend would be great.
