I have an 87 with a 302 that I want to swap for a Windsor 351 . How much is involved ? I keep getting conflicting reports about what I will have to change over. Both engines are fuel injected.
If yo have the complete engine from intake to oil pan, it is an easy swap; same motor mounts, tranny bell housing is the same; front accessories will swap with an adapter from Ford Motorsports; maybe some adjustments to throttle linkage. The flywheel/flexplate is different so make sure you have the correct one on your engine.
I think the 351 is a 95 and it is complete from the intake to the exhaust manifolds. Also since I think I have to change the Y pipe from the exhaust would it be worthwhile to invest in headers.
Headers will give you 20-30 HP and probably added torque. I highly recommend the Doug Thorley headers, they are a little more expensive, but you won't have any problems with them and they will fit like a glove. Their Tri-y design will give you added torque. While you're at it, put on dual cats and run your exhaust 2 1/4" dual all the way back.
That's what we did. I'd never done anything this radical and my son wanted to do some gearhead stuff (he was 15, now 16). Our next project is to pull my son's 350 out of his Camaro and drop a 400 hp 350 back in. That's after we completely redo the front end, swap in new body mount bushings, and put sway bars on.
