2005 6.8, a few weeks ago the truck started cranking a bit slower than usual, but always started the truck. It also always started right up (no long cranking). Today ran some errands with no issues. Came home, the wife took it for an errand. Came out and it cranked slowly for a couple seconds, then nothing. Now it won't turn over at all. I didn't have a multimeter at the scene, but battery (2 years old) seems to have plenty of juice, headlamps don't dim much while cranking. It doesn't seem to be a battery issue. I tried jumping it, left the jumper vehicle connected for 15-20 mins, still no crank at all. Can hear slight click, but that's it.
I'm leaning towards the starter, but I'm curious if that's how they go out (slower cranking for a while before fully dying). And if so, how difficult of a job is it?
I have had a starter go out that way, but it wasnt from age, it was from a little kid grabbing the keys and turning the key to start while the engine was already idling, it ground for a second obviously, after that it would only spin about half speed, still worked for about 2 more months, but then it failed out completely.
also wasnt on an excursion, was on something else.
Yeah starter. The motor starts requiring more juice to turn (your slow turns) this heats things up and either the solenoid dies or the motor (sounds like yours is the motor since you still have a click). Anyways doesn't matter which one cause you are going to be replacing them both. Its a easy job with the most difficult being getting to the top bolt of the starter. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&sour...YIrQyCMBSbR0kg
Check all of your battery cables, the cable down to the starter, and the frame cables off the battery. Poor, corroded connections can give you similar or the same symptoms..
I had the same issue with slow starting, thought it was just the batteries...could have been any of the parts I ended up replacing I guess. Here is a link to the post on it...
I had the same issue with the wire from the solenoid to the starter. It slowly corroded and then just failed. My truck was stuck at a friend's house when it happened. Once I found the issue, I was able to jumper the short wire so I could start the truck, get it home and fix it in the driveway.
