I went out to start my '97 F250 7.3 Crew 4x4 yesterday morning and it wouldn't start. I got the WTS, radio and everything that I should. When the wts went off, I turned the key, heard the fender mounted solenoid click, but that's it. I've got good battery voltage. I tried to bypass the fender mounted solenoid with jumper cables from one contact to the other and even direct from the battery to the output of the solenoid with the key on and it did not crank. It did start one time, but has quit since then. Of course, the one time it started, I was laying on the ground to measure voltage to the solenoid on the starter and asked the wife to turn the key and it started right up. As you can guess, I heard all about that for awhile. Like I said it only started that one time and won't now with the above symptoms. I'm guessing starter, but would like some confirmation and am also looking for any possible good info on starter upgrades. Thanks in advance.
I do not know of any upgrades. I replaced mine 5 years ago with, (I hate to say it) a Kragens starter and it fixed the problem. Mine did the same thing. I hit good and hard with a hammer while someone else turned the key so I could get it home.
Get your credit card ready because they are pricey.
It doesent always matter if the starter tests good or not it can still be bad. if you can hit it and it starts the relay is failing, if its turns slow with good batteries the bendix is weak. If you have it tested all they're gonna do is strap it down to a bench and put power to it, that shows it operates but doesnt put a load on it, and these engines need alot of power spinning them to get started so the starter could still have a weak bendix and appaer good on the bench. your almost better off simply replacing it with a new one and getting a warranty. Because sometimes they will fail almost right away even brrand new out of the box.
