I really like my truck. It's a weekend warrior vehicle and not my DD so she spends a lot of time just sitting outside. Only 91K miles and I'd love to keep her for a very long time. What concerns me though is rust. Chassis, linkage rust type stuff. Yesterday I was driving and notice thuds. Climbed underneath and it the front driver side sway bar linkage has rusted out. (The passenger side had a few years ago and I fixed that one). Not the end of the world but when you climb under there it's not pretty. There isn't rust to the point of compromising integrity but it's definitely taken hold and on it's way. There are areas where you can flick flakes off and must of the undercarriage in general is looking rusty. Looked like all of the rubber gromments and bushings underneath were pretty cracked and dried out too.
Like I said, I don't drive her much and it sucks knowing it'll most likely be rust that does her in before anything significant fails (engine, trans, etc.). Is there anything that can be done? Are there shops that would do something like sandblast the rust that's there off and then could apply some kind of coating that would either stop or severely slow the rusting process?

I have a 2003 XLT crew cab with 115k miles on it, we purchased it new in December 2002. The truck is our 3rd vehicle now and is our primary driver during the winter when the roads are salted. Its starting to show its rust under one door and some cross members supporting the bed. I just had a power steering line replaced last week and it passed inspection last January without any issues. I will need to get tires and front and rear brakes for next inspection though. I'd like to keep the truck however my wife is ready to sell it as it's our 3rd vehicle. Our 2nd vehicle is a pre emissions diesel used to tow our boat and our primary vehicle is a 2017 Honda Accord. The reason I want to keep the truck is our son is 14 and will be driving in 2 years. He said he doesn't want to drive a truck however I never complained to my parents when they offered me a free vehicle to drive.
