I've got a 1987 Bronco II with 2.9L EFI and Auto. When starting up I have to pump the pedal a couple of times before it starts and also when stopped at a light or something when I press on the gas it kind of hesitates for about a two seconds and then goes like nothing is wrong. Also I am getting a lot worse gas mileage lately.
When was the last time you did a tune up & fuel filter. Also testing the fuel pressure, checking the fuel pressure regulator vacuum line for gas and pulling the codes is were I would start.
If there's any gas or even a strong gasoline odor coming from the vacuum line on the back of the FPR, then your FPR is shot.
There's a diaphragm inside the FPR that should separate fuel from vacuum at all times. Once that diaphragm starts leaking, the vacuum sucks gas into the intake. This results in running rich (which results in poor mileage and eventually a failed catalytic converter) and it affects the fuel pressure. Neither of which is conducive to a well-running B2.
