Heater hose's

Now that spring has sprung I am going to hook up my heater. The 400 is in my 55 F-100 and has never had them hooked up. The question is where do they go ? Is there a proper way as to what nipple the water pushes from the motor to the heater core ? I have been told the the nipple on the block flows out and the one for the pump is return. I don't se that it would matter which way the water runs through the core.

The pump flows to the core, block is return. If one inlet is higher on the fire wall most people would tell you the pumps hose goes to it but your right, either way works.

Never been hooked up?
Did you replace the heater core?

I respectfully beg to differ on the flow direction and if it matters or not
The heater core needs hot water to give you heat
The hottest coolant is in the head and the port on the intake the closest
The core gets its hot coolant from the intake manifold
The pump side is the cold return side from the core
So the only difference is if you want good heat
It also works a bit better as a heat exchanger that way
I'll post a few pics

isn’t the hottest water going to the heater core regardless of hose orientation?

Yes, you are right, the only difference being the upper or lower hose and in many instances you cannot tell top from bottom anyway on the core without removing it
They just want any air trapped in the core to be at the top, ready to be sucked up by the pump while it transfers coolant head to head
Then eventually out to the radiator when the thermostat opens
So you are right
The only real difference then is where the air is
The heat transfers best through coolant not air so that is the reason for the hose routing diagrams

Thanks all. The reason that that it was not hooked up is that the P O did not have it hooked up. I am now finished with all that except for heater. I did a lot of reworking when I bought the truck. New ifs new rear all of the things we do to make it ours . ManicMechanic I like you quote that is why I have one truck and one car. One good thing is that she is for the old stuff.

On my '77 351M, the hose from water pump nipple goes to nipple on the left as you face the housing or firewall, the vacuum operated heater valve is midway in this hose. ,while the one from the block nipple goes to the one on the right as you look towards the firewall. It's a simple core, I don't think it matters one iota. Mine is like it has been since I bought the truck as I replace them one by one. just out of habit.

If it did not matter one iota Ford would have left the routing diagram out
Why pay a man to make a flow diagram if it matters not

Before you go to the trouble of connecting new heater pipes, check that the core itself does not leak.

If you intend replacing the coolant, drain the block as well. (This is a nasty mess of a job)

And if you drain the block, consider EZ or Fumoto drain valves which will make future coolant changes a breeze.
