22’ 10 speed issues

Other than the hard shifts. My 22’ with 11k miles feels like I’m dragging a a boulder behind it. It has the usual hard shifts here and there. But what concerns me is the “slipping” feeling it has through out the gears.(mainly 8-9-10). Sometimes it will drive fine, but then it will be like it can’t find a gear, or not shift up at all for some time. I also notice the trans temp goes up 15-20 degrees.

( ex.) this morning, I drive 15-20 miles to work. I stop at a drive thru and I notice the trans temp go from 204 up to 222 just sitting in drive thru. I pull away and the temp it will go down 5* approximately. While driving 40-50 mph the slipping/shuddering feels the worse and the temps go back up. After a few miles the temps will go down then back up and so on during the trip to work. I find it odd the temp fluctuation during the drive would be normal anywhere from 190 to 225 range all with in a 30-45 min drive city and hwy roads.

I had an 18’ 150 that had the same( & worse) issues(gear 10 slip out of gear and temp goes super high(235) and dealer at that time could not figure it out. After flashing the TCM several times and then eventually valve body replacement, which still did not work. I traded the 18’ 150 in for my 22’ 250 7.3 10spd and I’m not excited about dealing with the dealer again on the same issue but different vehicle. wondering if I should wait it out or take it in to get looked at. I did see something on YouTube that there looks to be TSB or something of that nature coming around the1st week of June.

Thoughts?

Quit watching the trans temp gauge like you know what the temps mean.... 8,9,10 are all overdrive gears, you will never be pulling very hard in those gears, maybe 8th at highway speeds.

Sorry to hear yours is giving you trouble. Mine is over 20k miles and working great. Good Luck. The dealer is really the only place you can turn. This is the very first I have read about an issue like this here.

Took mine in for the recall on the brake box and told them while towing only, and when downshifting from 3rd to second or first, I would get a good jar feeling from the shift. He said there was a flash update they could do. I think it was called a TM something but he knew exactly what I was talking about.
Perhaps call your dealer and see if they can do this to yours?

For some reason it seems like the 7.3's have more issues with the 10sp's then the 6.7's. There's endless threads on here with 7.3/10sp complaints, myself included.
I wouldn't worry about the temp's, but the "slipping", clunks, hard shifts, not being able to find a gear, absolutely awful tow/haul mode programming is all "normal".
My 2020 with 15k on it has all of the above, it hasn't gotten worse, or better, even with the latest TCM updates.

First I've heard of this. Most people say the 10R140 really knows what it's doing in tow/haul mode.

Has anyone experienced a shutter when going from reverse to drive. Every time I back up and then put into drive and push the gas I get a bucking and shutter. Almost feels like driving a manual when the clutch it let out to quickly with not enough gas pedal.

Mine has been flawless with a 6.7. I agree most complaints seem to be from gas/10 speed combinations. I hate my Dads F150 10 speed.

Every so often when it’s cold out (32° or less) mine will shudder after taking off from a park to drive shift. I think it’s happened two or three times, max. Sometimes during normal driving I can tell when the truck skips gears, but outside of that it’s been flawless. I like a bit of a firm shift, so when it shifts hard it doesn’t bother me.

Me personally I would get with 5 Star see if they experience the same with there tunes. Fords trans tuning is terrible even on the 6 speeds it was trash.

I find the Tow/Haul programming to be great going uphill but REALLY REALLY bad going downhill. The 1-3 skip I do not care for, I do not notice skipping 4th. With a little extra pedal from a stop I can get it to go 1-2-3-5 if nobody is in front of me. Cold it is a little harsh, and even 55-60 F "cold" means pretty jerky R-D-R action in the driveway. Once the slightest bit warm this goes away within reason. It is a SD truck. I had about 80 hours of snowplowing this winter, lots of tight spaces, lots of back and forth. The trans in my truck has not missed a beat.

I am really glad not to have had problems with the truck. I would hate to be dealing with warranty issues like that. Good Luck

engine temps never seen higher than 190
usually 182 to 187

Not noting any issues with our 22 7.3L. Pulling almost 14K at 70 we're usually in 8 or 9 depending on the terrain. Have not seen a trans temp over around 220 and that was in summer when the air temp was 3 digits and the road surface easily 130~140F.
