I have recently purchased an 87 F-150 with a 302W and am having a problem with the steering. I have absolutely no road feel and no resistance when i turn the steering wheel. There doesn't seem to be any excessive play at all. Would installing a Steering stabilizer help?
Malousek,
Its possible you have lots of play at the steering box . There is a adjustment nut on top of the box the takes the play out of the sector shaft but this should be done with care . Make sure all the other steering components are in good shape too IE : Tie Rods , Pitman Arm . Loosen the locknut on the shaft and turn the adjustment nut one turn clockwise at a time , tighten the locknut and drive the truck . Its best to do it this way otherwise you can overtighten and go from no feel to way too little play in the wheel which can cause some serious steering problems . It may take you a few hrs to get it the way it should be but its better than destroying a steering box because you overtightened the sector shaft .
