oil leak

I have an oil leak on the driver side of my 2004 f350 6.0. I have a billet oil filter cap with NPT nipple, I would like to inject air pressure into the oil filter cap to force oil to move to the leak where I hopefully may see where the oil is leaking.

What a safe PSI I can inject into the oil system from the oil filter billet cap. Or do I need to get the HPOP attachments and inject oil into the oil rail

Per the 6.0 Coffee Book the overall pressure is regulated to 75 psi. However the oil cooler bypass is set to 25 psi and the oil filter bypass is 20 psi. I recently pressure tested my coolant system and found leaks before reaching 10 psi. The sound of the leaks zeroed me in on them before seeing the coolant leaking. After correcting the leaks I pressured up to 15 psi and held it there for 20 minutes.

I don't think you will need very high pressure to find the leak. I'd keep it low around 10 to 14 psi. I'd even try lower first just to see if it did the trick before increasing it. Maybe 7 to 8 psi starting and then raise it incrementally till you find it. Full disclosure: I've never pressure tested an oil system before but think staying well below the filter bypass ought to keep you in safe territory. Other thought would be it might be easier for the air pressure to move the oil with it hot? Maybe someone whose done this before will chime in with more solid info.

The other way to find the leak would be to use fluorescent tracer dye and a black light, but it might cost a little for the volume of oil in the 6.0.

Well, it could be a few things. A power steering leak or one of the hydra-boost lines leaking. It could be a valve cover or a rocker box. Or even a bedplate. Or the Crank Case Venting system. Most of those won't be found by a pressure test. Do you have some pics you can post? B.

As I injected about 10 psi into the system, I felt air coming out the input side of the turbo. At this point I decided to check the tightness on all the bolts for the value cover gasket where I found one bolt extremely loose. have not checked if my bolt tightening worked as I take care of a few other issue on the engine.

That would be the Crank Case Vent system. That's where a lot of the oil in the intake air of the system comes from. Ever pull the CAC tubes? They will have a thin coating of engine oil. Common. B.
