Pig tail connectors

Gentlemen

I need to replace my IPR and coolant temperature connectors. What do u recommend for connecting/splicing wires. Is there anything that is as good as soldering without actually using a soldering gun and heat resistant? Thanks.

The guys who do this all the time recommend just using crimp connectors. There are some that have solder in them that you can heat and melt the solder after connecting. I always wrap with heat shrink on a job like that but some connectors integrate that into the connector.

The heat shrinkable butt-spice connectors should work for that. Trying to hold a soldering iron while leaning over your engine bay probably isn't the safest idea.

Like the butt crimp connectors that have heatshrink covering already on.

I believe the fellas are referring to soldering sleeves as seen below.

When I use something like this, I put at least one layer of shrink wrap over it too. Depending on the area and if like the IPR, I would put 2 with the second slightly longer and overlapping the first. That is just me though.

I found through experience and a friend that having a deflector similar to the one pictured below helps quite a bit.

You could use a small butane "torch" as well. They are cheap and can be bought at places like Wal-mart or parts stores. Not the 1' or so bottles with a neck on them, the small pencil sized ones like seen below. Also, the palm style with a trigger seem to work fairly well too. I have both, but never used the small pencil ones, not yet anyway.

Lastly you can use solder free connectors, but you need to use a high quality device and crimp tool.

More information on that in the quotes below as I don't want to piggyback or misrepresent anyone's methods or techniques.

It’s almost comical not to be ‘comfortable’ with connecting injector wires the way the factory did. The terminals in all of the pigtails on the truck are 100% crimp. Solder does NOT provide better continuity or perform better in any way, but it does provide more opportunities for failure...

These are the butt connectors I use. Also use the same style ring terminals, etc.

This is the double wall shrink tubing I like.

This is good stuff too.

I have a few crimp tools. My favorite looks like this. I’ve had a couple of these and I actually prefer the feel of some off-brand a friend recommended many years ago.

Since we are on the subject, my favorite wire strippers are similar to this. I have a couple automatic strippers and they work ok, but I find this style faster/easier to use. Especially with Romex.

Toss all of those skinny POS crimp tools from Kmart and the autoparts in the trash immediately.

Thanks, guys

I really appreciate the help. I hesitated asking this question because if felt it was a "no-brainer" but I knew that you would have the best info.

Thanks again.
