Seeing as how this is a safety issue & could become a Big legal issue in case of an accident involving a braking problem, non-conforming or specified parts could become a serious issue in more ways than one, so best if we use the specified parts, that can be looked up for your factory build, by entering the vehicle VIN # here. Looking at the limited parts books that I have, it appears this part fits only '98and up vehicles, so a part from a '97 won't work. And, like you've noticed, all original sources for this part have had it discontinued and is NLA. Ford seems to be famous for stuff like that.
Ironically, I have a '98 Ranger 2WD 3.0 which will be parted out this year, but I'm currently driving it, so I can't help you there. (BTW, I popped the hood on my vehicle this morning to make sure they are the same and they appear to be)
Your best choice, as previously stated, is to hit the salvage yards and see if you can't find one there. I'd bet somebody local has one. I also agree that substituting a part from a previous year could open yourself up to a legal can of worms even if it did work. But that's just me.
ALL THAT BEING SAID, looking at your photo, it appears that it is leaking on the bottom where there is a nut and probably an O-ring and the fluid is blowing back as you drive down the road. (For people viewing and not knowing, the right side of the photo faces the front of the vehicle and the left side of the photo faces the rear of the vehicle with this ABS modulator sitting on top of the driver's side wheel well under the hood) As a last resort, could you remove this modulator and hold it in a shop vise and see of the nut can be tightened? I'm thinking that a good tightening with a closed-end wrench might just stop the leak. Or, it might make it worse. Anyway, I would think it would be worth a try. Good luck.
