Turn up the radio. A pump can make noise if it's aerating the fluid. That will cause a howl or whine. The howl would be constant, but louder under load.. This can happen when the fluid level is low or the front seal is sucking air. You might not be hearing anything other than normal pump noise. They all make noise when the loads are higher, such as turning the wheel while the vehicle is stationary. Or when hitting the steering locks and putting the pump at full pressure.

Makes perfect sense. You described the sound perfectly & when the sound occurs!! I've owned 25+ trucks and SUV and never heard it before. After reading all the issues folks have with current generation vehicles, I've become a bit paranoid. Thanks!
I need to turn the radio on more because these newer trucks make all kinds of odd noises. My truck makes a rubbing/squeaking sound when turning right, it sounds like something is dry.
My 17 6.7 steering hisses pretty good. It doesn’t start doing it until the truck is at full operating temp. Then when I’m NEAR full lock it hisses like crazy with the steering wheel at a certain spot. Once it makes the noise it will then hiss when the wheel is in that same spot regardless of where it’s at lock to lock. Dealer change the pump under warranty and said all good. The day I picked it up from them I was able to duplicate the noise. Left it with them again to see what else they can blame it on and the “couldn’t duplicate the issue”
The problem I have is the steering works fine when van is first started but tightens up about 10 seconds later. I recently installed a reman pump and rack and replaced both hoses.I have drained and bled system about five times. I’m thinking I have a defective pump, it does steer when moving but it’s not what it should be. I initially put the rack on first, and the old pump promptly started leaking. But it steered fine with old pump. Put reman pump on and problem started. Anyone have any suggestions? 96 aero 3.0 . Also changed pulley and put on new belt
