stereo (entire head unit) issues

for the second time now when turning the truck on the radio screen remains black, no lights no power to unit. the first time i turned off the truck and restarted it and the unit came back on and all was fine- this time (months later) i turned on the truck to a dead head unit, turned off the key and turned back on to nothing- multiple times. i drove home with a dark and quiet screen and once home (1hr) turned the truck off and as i pulled the key out of the ignition the screen lit up like it does when shutting down- i put the key back in the ignition and started the truck and the screen came on like nothing was wrong.
obviously something is up but i just dont know what is the issue- thoughts or things to look for?
