It got cold AF last night. This morning my truck wouldn't crank. It just turned over and turned over with a cloud of white smoke that would scare the neighborhood, and it never cranked. I also noticed that my battery meter never went down when I turned the key over. So, I got under the hood and bridged the two big poles on the glow plug relay for about 20 seconds, and she fired right up. What I didn't understand is, when I crossed the two poles, I didn't see any Sparks. I would have thought it would have been like a starter relay whereas when you crossed it it would spark as the screwdriver came into contact. It never did that. But she fired right up immediately with no hesitation after that. The glow plug relay was replaced by the previous owner 2 years ago with a part from the auto parts store. I know they are junk and I am probably lucky to have gotten two years from it. My question is, what's the best one to go with? Do the auto parts stores carry a specific brand that I can have in a couple of days that's worth a toot? Or do I have to order it and wait a week and keep crossing the relay?

#16-009 White-Rodgers (Stancor) 586 902 Monster Glow Plug Relay.
Make sure you look at the amp rating capacity - startup and continuous.
This is beefy and I think guys have used one or two others which are good.
Do install the LED GP light - no brained.
That looks quite a bit different from the oem. I can tell from the look of it it doesn't look like it's made for this application but, since you posted it, I assume that means it's pretty good and an upgrade over what else we can find. It looks like the mounts might not line up but, I guess that is a minor inconvenience if it means upgrading to a better relay. Thank you, I will look into it!
You need to come up north to get a taste for real cold.
-10 wind chill today
It didn't get into the negatives but it sure got cold enough. It wasn't too bad. I would definitely have to get a custom to that weather for a while before I could live there comfortably. Heck I don't know if there ever is a way to live there comfortably. Probably sucks for you even though you've been there for so long. That's just too darn cold!

Although I understand why a GP LED is nice, it was very easy to diagnose because my battery meter didn't jump down when I turned the key on. Although an LED light would have been quicker and easier, but it still didn't take me but a couple of minutes. Some people actually put a charging port charger in that has a battery reading on it so you can see when the glow plugs start draining the battery power. That doesn't mean I won't put a GP LED but, I have a lot of other things I want to mount in the dash before I pick a spot for the led. Thank you for your advice I will look into that relay.
My part store relay only lasted a couple years. Unfortunately I didn’t realize I’d already replaced it until I put the new part relay on.
Next time I will just cross the relay and wait until a good one can ship in. I see a lot of guys using the trombetta (spelling?) lately. Supposedly it fits more like stock than some of the other “upgrades”.
I was planning on doing a LED for the GPR because inevitability the non working condition sneaks up on me with my limited use of the truck. I even ordered in some LEDs for the mod. But since then I’ve decided I may rather find a digital voltmeter for the power port and use it. Less fuss and who couldn’t use an extra USB charge port?

The voltmeter in the charge port is exactly what I was talking about and that last post I did. You can clearly see if the glow plugs are draining power or not. Just about the easiest way to know. I will look into this trombetta relay. Thanks!

Which voltmeter did you go with?
I know it can be seen on the dash gauge as well but why not buy a cheap new “toy”?
I do need to learn to keep an eye on the gauge after startup. The main idea is to quickly spot a bad GPR instead of waiting until it’s cold and catches me off guard. That’s what happened last time. It was starting a little more “sluggish” for a while, then had a cold day and didn’t want to start at all. Finally dawned on me at that point.
A relay is a relay is a relay. It is an electromagnetic switch that uses low amps to control a switch that handles high amps. I cannot find the one I installed about 7 years ago but I got it off of fleabay and it looked similar to this. You just want to make sure that it's rated for the amps involved (I don't know what that is) and you might have to wing it with the mounting holes.

The relay awlbernin posted is what I bought. I still need to replace it. I just swapped in the relay from the deleted AIH for temporary measure while waiting for the new one. Eventually temporary will end!
Quality part that is a direct factory replacement. The WR/Stancor is a nice part, but it is twice the size and requires a bit of finagling to get it mounted properly.

You can see it on the dash gauge but, it's cool to see the actual numbers
I don't currently have a voltmeter charger. iirc, the last car charger I had messed up for some reason or wouldn't work on my truck anymore. I don't remember. I need to pick one up. I will prob pick one up at Wally world just fun. I will try to find a better one on Amazon at a later date but for now, I will see how Wally world does. Edit* Wally world didn't have one. Here's the one I want. I might look for one with two USB ports instead of one, at the same time I wanted to try out one of those C to C chargers

The truck cranked up fine yesterday, except for the long start which I blamed on air in the h-pop system. Maybe it was due to the glow plugs not turning on. Luckily, I quickly figured out it was the GP relay. I have a new one on its way. Thank you for the link and your help!
