2021 PowerBoost steering effort/alignment
I have a 2021 PowerBoost with the long wheelbase, supercrew, long bed. Since I took delivery of the truck, I had noticed that the steering effort in parking lot maneuvering was more and more difficult the further off center you got. Not impossible to turn, but definitely got harder to turn before you reached the end of travel. Then, after about 2500-3500 miles, I noticed that the outer edges of the front tires were wearing unevenly, kind of feathered. I can add a picture if needed. The truck drove straight, however, no pull to either side or anything like that.
I took it to the dealer for an alignment (had to wait a month due to no appointments available) and they confirmed that the toe was out of spec, but not dramatically. So they did the alignment and rotated the tires. I asked the service writer what they had found about the steering effort. He said, nothing to report, it was behaving normally. But as soon as I got in the truck, the steering effort felt entirely different, like I would have expected it to. Totally smooth and "normal" feeling all the way from full left to full right.
So my question is - what could have caused the change in steering effort? It doesn't seem like merely adjusting the toe would have done that. I emailed and asked the service writer what they changed on the steering but he hasn't responded yet. I did read about a recall on certain VINs for a broken steering ball/nut component, but my truck was built months after the affected date range. I waited for the truck at the service department, and I was there for about 2.5 hours total, so it doesn't seem like enough time to do anything major from a mechanical parts replacement perspective, but maybe a software update? Has anyone else had a similar issue?
I guess I wouldn't think too much of it if the service writer had said, oh, yes, we updated the software on the steering module and that should improve the steering effort issues you were having, but the fact that he said they did nothing and that what I had been noticing was totally normal behavior makes me uneasy. (and no response to my email yet either)
Thanks
Alec
