Here is my scenerio: My truck is deleted and has been since 16000 miles(just rolled over 90k). I do not drive it as often a I should. During much of the pandemic, it was simply started and moved out of my shop then later, started and moved back in several times a week. Also, during this time, i changed the air filter and snapped the maf sensor plug in connector. I then started noticing that I was getting an overboost (bad enough that it blew off my CAC tube and eventually broke it). I did make several big trips pulling my Jeep TJ on an open trailer including all the way to Florida and to Hot Springs from Fort Worth with the only time I had issue with over boosting was after start. The motor would actually bog down and blow smoke which would indicate that I wasn't getting enough boost although the gage was maxed out? After the initial problem, the truck would run normal but the gage would still read higher boost pressures when accelerating( 30-to almost max).
I have cleaned the MAP, repaired (half assed) the wiring to the maf and replaced the CAC tube9and new fuel filters) and now the truck operates as normal. I plan on replacing the maf and buying a new connector plug and splicing it in. After the repair, I did see a slight improvement of mpg which means my turbo was probably not operating efficiently due to these issues.
i could not find a lot of information about this at the time but I am seeing more and more reported overboost issues and suspect there are some dirty sensors(maf or map) popping up...
UPDATE. I towed home without much trouble. Kept my foot out of it but on a couple hard pulls I had to lift a bit to keep the boost at 30 lbs or less. On one merge uphill I got up around 35 before I could let up. Since I got home I took it out and tried a bunch of different things. Seems like without the trailer on a level of downhill (easy) takeoff it will go to around 24 lbs. But on an uphill (hard) takeoff it goes to 40psi, because I have a good feel for it now I lift before it defuels. So, that's where I am. I think I'll see if I can do anything with a new MAF. It disturbs me that I'm not getting a code. Gonna contact the code writer and see if he thinks there is something in the tune causing it. Also I think I will put the stock CAC tube back on and see if that changes anything. As best I know the problem began after they installed the tube. It's crazy but I'm desperate. If none of that works I guess I'll try a pro. If I can find one who will work on a modified truck.
I got a DTC twice. Usually it would overboost, derate then everything would work fairly normally although the boost guage would get close to max when hard accelerating. I have order a MAP sensor and plug for the MAF which haven't arrived yet to see if i can get my issue under control. This has been going on and off for about a year. i have towed my jeep to Florida, Arkansas , OK and south Texas with this issues and really after it overboosts once, it is fine. I have noticed that it is trying to cycle the turbo and I can hear the tone change to a hiss occassionally when idling. I haven't totally eliminated the turbo actuator solenoid either but knowing i have a wiring issue(potential) and a clogged map sensor that i would start there
Thanks. My issues sound similar. I got no codes during these events. That may be due to my tune. I don't know. I have changed the MAP with no change. Because my stock CAC tube was new (I had a blow out and had a spare in my tool box) in January, I removed the new temp sensor and installed it in my after market CAC tube with no change.. Today I got my MAF sensor and I will install it in the morning and see what happens. I'm driving the truck daily and so long as I keep my foot out of it it seems fine. When I put it under stress the boost goes to either 25 lbs, 30 lbs or at time maxes at 40. And it feels like a rocket ship. A lot of power, more than normal. My tune is STOCK POWER AND TRANNY Delete and block. But it feels like my 6.4 did with a performance tune. I had my tune done on line so I can't take it in to check the tune. If you figure anything out please let me know and I'll do the same for you.
See other post, I have not figured mine out and same as you. deleted, tow tune. I am not hard on the gas usually. After start, my truck will max out the boost guage just driving down the street with low acceleration. after it hits the max once, it seems to run as normal but will still get to 30 on the boost guage. And, yes, it does feel like a rocket ship and yes, i blew out the stock cac tube and bought another stock one. I suspect it was over boosting. I am going to take mine to one of the diesel guys here in the area next week and get it diagnosed and fixed.
This is getting really long. Installed a new MAF sensor yesterday. I ran it pretty hard on a number of test runs from stop to 80MPH. It appears to be much better. The boost was maxing at 25 to 28 psi. On a couple runs it reached 30 lbs but none over 30 PSI runs. I'm down to my last two ideas. 1. Re install the stock CAC tube 2 check the turbo boost solenoid. That solenoid is under the CAC tube and runs from two vacuum lines. I'm wondering if the solenoid or one of the hoses could have been disturbed when the new CAC was installed. FWIW my stock CAC tube blew out not long before I noticed this problem. I had a new spare and it was on for a short time then they installed the after market CAC tube. Then the day after it was installed the bottom end blew off. I guess the tech forgot to tighten the clamp. I reinstalled and tightened the clamp. I have no idea if both of us blowing out the CAC and having this problem is related. Just thought I would mention it.
I haven't driven mine much this month. I need to still figure mine out before heading to Moab this fall pulling my Jeep. been watching these posts occasionally to see if anyone else is making headway
OK, I finally went to see my "diesel guy' At Macs Diesel just south of Benbrook, TX. He suugested that i try a MAF sensor, then he would put my truck on the diagnostics but he pretty much told me that my turbo was probably sticking just a little. It is funny because it only does it once after a cold start then it is fine and it doesn't throw a code unless i stay on the throttle( not hard, just depressed enough to go) and let the boost gauge stay above 30 for very long. I usually let off and it will eventually unstick with in the first few minutes of driving. More to follw
I’m watching. Thanks for reporting. If I need to replace the turbo it will be the third time to remove all the “stuff” in the way. Twice for exhaust manifold work. Lats of labor. I’m wondering if the tunes are causing us the problems. I haven’t heard many others having this problem.
I think my problem is mainly lack of driving. My shop got really damp and with the exhaust that I have now, probably some condensation. My thoughts anyway. i am still not driving it much and after the initial sticking, i am good to go. i am heading to Moab in the fall( was supposed to be this spring but had to go through a whole cancer thing with my wife). She is on the mend and we hope she is healthy enough to do a week of wheeling by September. In the meantime, i will continue to procrastinate about fixing my truck, lol.
